SOTW: Childish Gambino – “To Be Hunted”

Song of The Week: Childish Gambino“To Be Hunted”

Released: May 13, 2024

Rate: 10/10

RIYL: Frank Ocean, TV Girl, Orion Sun, Chappell Roan, Steve Lacy

This past May, Childish Gambino released his 16th studio album, “Atavista,” and it may be one of his best yet. The album includes 11 songs, each bringing their own taste to the table. My favorite and the easy choice of this week’s Song of the Week, “To Be Hunted,” certainty stands out amongst the rest. Gambino builds upon his 70’s synthetic sounds, adding that hint of personality that makes his music as distinguishable as it is.

“To Be Hunted” is the 5th song on the album but takes the trophy to my liking. The quick 1-2 beat is perfect for any function and definitely encourages a strong sense of dignity to any listener. Gambino opens the first 30-seconds with the line “You’re so gorgeous, nothing’s ever really worth your time … but someday soon, you just might find the truth about the world’s design.” To which he amps the title of track “Oh, to be beautiful is to be hunted.” Gambino’s musical literacy is easy and promising as each line hits more than the next. Truly, 10 out of 10 track.

Baltimore Sports History: The Orioles

Wednesday, May 15th, 2024 by The Professor

by Andrew Ciofalo, host of After The Whistle

The last time Baltimore had a Major League Baseball team was in 1902 when the Oriole franchise was transferred to New York. What followed was over 50 years without another Major League Baseball team in the city. That was until the failing St. Louis Browns franchise owned by Bill Veeck sold his Browns to a group headed by a Baltimore attorney, Clarence Miles.

A quick rewind and brief history of the St. Louis Browns, the franchise started life as the Milwaukee Brewers in 1894 and played in the Western League. At the time it was considered a minor league and played in it until 1899. In 1900 the Western League, under control of President Ban Johnson, was renamed the American League and converted to a Major League in 1901. Before the first season, Ban Johnson wanted the franchise to move to St. Louis as it was a much bigger city and didn’t believe a team would survive in Milwaukee. Team owner Matthew Killilea was able to convince Johnson to a one-year prove-it year in Milwaukee. This one year was a complete failure as the Brewers finished in dead last in the league. The team would be moved to St. Louis and would get new ownership as well as a new name: the St. Louis Browns. (more…)

by Liz Kosik ’25

WLOY is excited to highlight our Loyolapalooza artist, Fitz and the Tantrums!

Fitz and the Tantrums arrived on the music scene in Los Angeles in 2008, bringing with them a fresh blend of indie pop and neo soul sounds. The band’s core duo, Michael Fitzpatrick (Fitz) and Noelle Scaggs, joined forces with James King, Joseph Karnes, Jeremy Ruzumna, and John Wicks to create their famous ensemble. What definitely set them apart from the beginning was their energetic live performances and their commitment to crafting catchy sound.

Vinylthon 2024

Monday, April 22nd, 2024 by Liz Kosik

by Liz Kosik ’25

And that’s a wrap! WLOY has concluded its 7th year of Vinylthon, upholding the tradition. This year’s event was particularly special as we welcomed back esteemed alumni and past DJs, some dating all the way back to the 70s! The excitement was in the air as we reunited with our very own Eddie Fine ’23 and Anna Markulis ’23 for the day. The Loyola community showcased its spirit, with dozens of students enthusiastically participating in our raffle-giveaway. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who hosted a show for Vinyl Hour, returned to visit for the day, entered our raffles, and showed their unwavering support for WLOY. Also, a special thank you to Wax Mage for their custom-made vinyl designs! With memories of this year fresh in our minds, we can’t help but wonder how we’ll top it next year!
