Explore Baltimore: Rawlings Conservatory

Where: Druid Hill Park
Located within Druid Park, Rawlings Conservatory and Botanical Gardens are a sight to be seen. Established in 1888, the Conservatory was designed by the famous architect George Federick and is home to various types of plants. They have several rooms to create different climates, allowing the Conservatory to house plants from all over the world.
As the season starts to change, come out to the Howard Rawlings Conservatory to cure your dreariness. Explore the inside of the beautiful building and look at Mediterranean flowers, tropical flowers, desert plants, and different types of Orchids. After a tour around this floral wonderland, your mood will be as bright as the flowers in the Conservatory.

Explore Baltimore: Segway Safaris

What’s the most touristy thing a tourist can do in Baltimore? Most people would say walking around the Inner Harbor. But no, they’re wrong; you can take it one step further by Segway-ing around the Inner Harbor. Segs in the City offers a ninety minute Segway Safari around the Inner Harbor/Fells Point so you can enjoy the scenery and the history of Baltimore area in comfort. Some of the points of interests seen on the Segway tour include Federal Hill, Katyn Memorial, Little Italy, and Harbor East. However, Segway Safari offers several tweaked routes, so feel free to build a route that appeals to your interests. Book your tour here and get rolling!

Explore Baltimore: Bookfestival

Where: Inner Harbor
When: September 23rd-25th, 11am-7pm
Make reading fun by stopping by the Baltimore Bookfestival this weekend! This annual event has authors from all over and all levels of fame. You can pick up your favorite novels from one of the hundred booksellers, or discover a new favorite by listening to some of the many on-stage readings.
Books aren’t the only fun at the Inner Harbor this weekend though. The Bookfestival will have live music ever day from bands of every genre. There will also be some awesome activities going on throughout the weekend like book speed dating, pets on wheels, book page art, and swordplay demos. Each day has its own schedule of events, which you can check out here. Almost all events are free along with free admission, and if you’re a Loyola student, there will be free shuttles on Saturday.

Explore Baltimore: Patterson Park

Patterson Park is home to some great sights in Baltimore. With attractions like the Patterson Pagoda, this is a beautiful park and a must-see while in the city! Within the park there is architecture free to explore. For example, the Patterson Pagoda, built in 1890, is open to the public from noon to 6pm on Sundays. So go walk the beautiful spiral stars and appreciate what is considered to be a symbol of Baltimore. Not to mention, they also host family events there from time to time.
If it’s a little hotter out, then you can also check out Boat Lake. Go look a the wildlife living around the lake or stroll down the boards on the water. Grossed out by the waterfowl? Then check out the fountain instead! Designed by the great George Frederick, this historical fountain is a neat place to hang out with your friends and take in the scenery. Or just go for a swim in the public pool!
Normally, parks in Winter are horrible. But not here! With admission to the ice skating rink priced at only $4.00, it’s a steal to come skate on a nice December day. You can find the hours for the rink here. No matter what the season, day or time, there’s plenty to see at the great Patterson Park, so make sure to add it to your Baltimore trip itinerary!

Tourism Tuesday: Penguin Coast

I am very excited to tell you about Penguin Coast at the Maryland Zoo and I think I might procrastinate on everything and go visit penguins. They are cute, they are friendly, and they look funny when they walk. I love them.
So waddle on down to the Maryland Zoo to see your favorite lil’ guys in the new exhibit. Penguin Coast features African penguins, this habitat is designed to replicate an African penguin’s environment on the South African Coast. Luckily for us humans, we will be able to get closer than ever and truly observe penguins with the new design. This is a great addition for both the penguins and their fans!

Tourism Tuesday: Inner Harbor

I think this might be the most vague Tourism Tuesday, but yes, the Inner Harbor in the spring is something that every tourist and Baltimorean should visit/experience. We have all been spoiled with this amazing weather the past couple of days so how can one not think of a harbor with sail boats, blue crab, water taxis and the taste of a cool drink down by the water.
The Inner Harbor is the place to go because not only do they offer excellent dining choices they also have a wealth of fun activities. Try out the water taxi with the family to see all of Baltimore’s sites, or hit up Ripley’s Believe It or Not, or just go for a nice walk around the harbor.

Tourism Tuesday: Baltimore 10-Miler

What: Baltimore 10-Miler Race
When: June 4
Where: Druid Lake to Lake Montebello
No need to panic! You still have 56 days until the big day! The big day being the Baltimore 10-Miler…duh…
This is an excellent course, you may just want to go run it for fun after this… There are some lovely scenic routes as you loop around Druid Lake and Lake Montebello. After you beat that 10 mile mark you will be greeted with juicy, thirst quenching watermelons and cold towel, and special beverages for people of age. The super cool thing about the Baltimore 10-Miler race is that there are several way that you can give to some excellent charities through running. Places such as Athletes Serving Athletes, Back On My Feet, Team Diabetes, and Signal 13.
Volunteers are needed to make this all possible so if watching people run is more your speed then sign up!
So buy yourself some sweet Mizunos, put that running belt in place and jump into training to have an excellent race day! Go here to figure out where you need to do to get behind the start line!

Tourism Tuesday: Orioles!

Baltimoreeeee the O’s are back and better than ever!
It is finally that time of year where we can head over to Camden Yards, get a hot dog and what a good old fashioned ball game. For Baltimore natives or tourists this is an excellent idea to hang out with friends and family as the weather begins to get nicer and nicer. Make sure to find your best orange or Oriole’s attire, a faded orange baseball cap is absolute must, do not speak to me if you are not wearing one.
Oriole Park opened on April 6 in 1992, this is a ball park that paved the way for many more across the country. So while in Baltimore this season why not catch a game and take a tour of Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

Calling all tourists! It is finally that time of year again where we all get to ride the magical ride that is the Baltimore Water Taxi. You’ve seen it here before and you will probably see it again! Simply because WLOY just wants to remind you how cool the water taxi is for Baltimoreans and tourists.
This taxi has 16 stops for you to observe and explore: Aquarium, Harborplace, Science Center, Rusty Scupper, Pier Five, Harbor East, Maritime Park, Locust Point, Fell’s Point, Captain James Landing, Canton Waterfront Park. Yes, I listed a lot of places right now, which mean you have plenty options when choosing the water taxi as your main form of transportation.

Tourism Tuesday: Lake Roland Park

When the sun is out and you’re visiting Baltimore go to Lake Roland Park for a nice a hike with your family and friends. I’m sure you have already seen the Inner Harbor (because you’re an active Tourism Tuesday reader) and now you’re a tourist that needs to spice things up with entertaining physical activity. Nothing like the great outdoors to do that!
Interested in canoeing? Well grab your canoe and go because Lake Roland offers a canoe launch! Or hit the Red, or Blue trail for some awesome bike riding!
Lake Roland also has fun events like an easter egg hunt this March 24th!
Get out in the spring fresh air at Lake Roland Park!
