Long, tall and gorgeous, Baltimore’s Washington Monument stands proudly in the classy Mount Vernon neighborhood.

Designed in the early 1800’s by the same architect who created the better-known Washington Monument in D.C., it can be seen from inside the sophisticated Walter’s Art Gallery and is only steps away from the musically rambunctious Peabody Institute. (more…)

February is Black History month and Baltimore has the perfect Museum where you can celebrate. The Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History & Culture is educational, entertaining and generally spectacular.

Sports Saturday: Monster Jam

Monster trucks. Monster drivers. MONSTER JAM.

That’s right, the carnival of carnage is coming to Baltimore at the end of February, setting up shop at the 1st Mariner Arena from the 25th until the 27th. Monster Jam is a live motorsport event that tours the country, allowing fans to look on as enormous trucks destroy smaller ones salvaged from scrap yards only to meet a more painful demise. Appearing in four separate installments, there will be competitions in both racing, as well as performing freestyle tricks with these monstrous machines. With names like “Grave Digger,” “Martial Law,” “Aftershock” and “Mechanical Mischief,” it’s almost impossible to turn away from the mayhem. (more…)

Theater Thursday: “Jersey Boys”

If you were raised on a healthy dosage of 60’s pop rock then you are luck. Even if you weren’t, yet you are looking for a night out on the town, then the Hippodrome Performing Arts Center is the place to be. The four-time Tony Award winning musical Jersey Boys has finally arrived in Baltimore, and will stay at the Hippodrome until Sunday, February 27th. The production has enjoyed critical acclaim since its debut in 2004, and has toured throughout the United States as well as England, Canada, and Australia. Baltimore is lucky enough to be the next stop on their tour; however, the boys will not be here for long so the time to act is now. (more…)

Wacky Wednesday: Joe Squared

On Loyola’s campus alone there are over five places that will deliver pizza right to our hungry pizza craving faces. But if you’re interested in a different and perhaps more entertaining way to chomp on some cheesy crust, consider Joe Squared.

The restaurant, bar, slash music venue offers a new setting in which to enjoy the classic meal. The eccentric pizzeria hosts artists for acoustic dinners from 7-9p.m almost every night.

Music variety mimics Joe’s extensive topping choices, ranging from indie rock to funky jazz and occasional break dance parties. Located a quick drive from Loyola, Joe Squared can provide a delish meal and great tunes any night of the week. (more…)

Museum Monday: Baltimore Street Car Museum

How often does one hear about the heydays of streetcars in Baltimore, or better yet ride around in them? Since the jazzy flapper filled times of the roaring 1920s, Baltimore’s streetcar use declined and spiraled into eventual non-existence. But there is one place these beautiful street machines live on!

The Baltimore Street Car Museum displays multiple streetcars ranging in size and antiquity. Admission, $7 for adults, includes unlimited rides on authentic Baltimore streetcars and an all around enjoyable chance to learn some stellar streetcar history. Located only a short jaunt from Loyola on Falls Road, the Baltimore Streetcar Museum will drive you wild. (more…)

Wacky Wednesdays: Stoneleigh Lanes

Like bowling but wish it was different? Search no more! Down the street from Loyola lay Stoneleigh Lanes, which features 16 lanes of duckpin bowling. Yes, you heard me correctly: I said duckpin bowling. And no, it doesn’t involve ducks. Although the rules are similar to normal ten-pin bowling, duckpin bowling is not the bowling that you may be used to playing. Voted the “Best Bowling Alley” by Baltimore Magazine, Stoneleigh Lane’s duckpin bowling is a new and interesting way to bowl!
