Museum Mondays: Jewish Museum of Maryland

Where: Inner Harbor

Established in 1879, this museum was created to preserve the Jewish American history and culture. The second largest port of immigration to the United States was here in Baltimore, bringing two great waves of Jewish immigrants. This museum is the only museum in America with two historic synagogues preserved for the public. They are situated right in the heart of a historic Jewish neighborhood.

This museum is the third largest fire museum in the world, with 40 antique engines, a reconstructed firehouse, and the Great Baltimore Fire and other fire service history exhibits, and steam engine and apparatus demonstrations.

Museum Mondays: Cylburn Arboretum

When: Saturdays 12pm-3pm and Sunday 1pm-4pm

The Cylburn Nature Museum, located in the garage of the Carriage House, displays natural history exhibits of Maryland birds, bird eggs from the late 19th century, butterflies and moths, rocks and minerals, fossils and seashells, games, and habitat dioramas. Many items are available to touch.

The Nature Museum displays one of the finest and most comprehensive collections of Birds of Maryland*, with over 250 mounted specimens, nests and eggs. There are also butterflies, fossils, seashells, skulls, rocks, and a small hands-on exploration area and library.

Museum Mondays: Irish Railroad Workers

The Great Famine cause a huge influx of Irish immigrants in the mid 1800’s. Many settled right here in Baltimore and went to work in the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. The Irish Railroad Workers Museum consists of two renovated alley houses in 900 block of Lemmon Street. The houses on Lemmon Street were built in 1848 to provide homes for the growing number of workers needed by America’s first railroad. One of the houses is furnished as a period-house museum, reflecting the lives of the Irish-immigrant family who lived there in the 1860s. The other house offers changing exhibits relating to Irish-American history and local neighborhood life.
