WLOY Coffee House Presents: Blind Man Leading

Monday, February 24th, 2014 by WLOY Staff

blindmanWho’s that guy at the WLOY open mic nights? You know, the dude who always comes singin’ songs about Greek mythology and absolutely kills it. Well, that’s our friend Dave, and this Thursday at WLOY’s Coffee House he will be accompanied by his posse of sound sculptors. Indigenous to our very own Baltimore, Blind Man Leading brings you a bodacious blend of rock-pop placed within the subtleties of jazz rhythm. If you’ve never heard of Blind Man Leading, relinquish your deafness and check out their newly released EP “SWORDS” or a some of their live performances.  After you’re awed (which you most definitely will be) come by the 3rd Floor Reading Room, this Thursday night, 9pm.

Yeezus in the Charm City

Friday, February 21st, 2014 by WLOY Staff

Yeezus
Written by: Jeremy Stephenson

With his first solo tour in five years, you know Mr. West rolled his sleeves up to make his Baltimore fans remember why he is the icon he is today. First of all, this concert and tour is nothing like any other rap tour or any tour for that matter to date. A tremendous 35 song set list including tracks from his latest, and sixth album, Yeezus, and even his inaugural decade old album, The College Dropout definitely had any Ye fan walking away with a nice “did I just see that!?” grin after the show.

The show kicked off with the unveiling of a massive mountain in the back of the stage, which followed with Kanye’s twelve dancers who were dressed in fully nude pantyhose, and were incorporated throughout the show’s entirety. Kanye then dramatically weaved his way through his girls and started with the first song off his Yeezus album, “On Sight.” (more…)

WLOY Late Night Concert: Wendel Patrick 2/20/14

Monday, February 17th, 2014 by WLOY Staff

1484729_10152192884327265_583046015_n-300x300I believe it is safe to say Wendel Patrick is a man of science. Now, this does not imply his musicianship is anything less than artful, or the music less soulful, or the sound at all mechanical. Rather, it is that Wendel’s moment of  catharsis lives within an arrangement of mathematical precision. Like a mad-scientist in his laboratory, he is an alchemist of sound, meticulously blending consonance and dissonance as if they were volatile fluids finding solace in embrace. This Thursday night Wendel Patrick will be headlining WLOYs Late Night Concert Event, rockin’ the house with tracks from his recent four album release. If you hadn’t yet put the clues together, Wendel Patrick is Loyola own former professor of music, Kevin Gift! Haven’t heard any of his music? Well, get experienced. Show starts 9pm, be sure to bring your hazmat suit.

War Horse Tickets

Tuesday, January 14th, 2014 by The Professor

war horse
Once again, WLOY wants to send you to opening night at the Hippodrome! This time to see the remarkable theatrical version of War Horse on February 4th. Win tickets at our Thursday Coffeehouse events and during our Friday Live at Boulder shows.

A remarkable tale of courage, loyalty and friendship. England, 1914.

As World War One begins, Joey, young Albert’s beloved horse, is sold to the cavalry and shipped from England to France. He’s soon caught up in enemy fire, and fate takes him on an extraordinary journey, serving on both sides before finding himself alone in no man’s land. But Albert cannot forget Joey and, still not old enough to enlist, he embarks on a treacherous mission to find him and bring him home.

This powerfully moving and imaginative drama, filled with stirring music and songs, is a show of phenomenal inventiveness that is currently playing to packed houses in London and New York. At its heart are astonishing life-sized puppets created by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company, that bring to life breathing, galloping, charging horses strong enough for men to ride.

The performances are daily from 2/4-2/9, with 8:00pm shows during the week and 2 shows on Saturday (2 & 8pm) and Sunday (1:00 & 6:30pm). More details and tickets can be found here.
