Toronzo Cannon Interview 2/27/16
Sunday, February 28th, 2016 by The Professor
Bluesman and MTA bus driver Toronzo Cannon lit up the scene at the 2016 Lancaster Roots and Blues Festival with a wild set at the Federal Taphouse to a hyped up crowd. Hitting tracks from his new Chicago Way album (his first on venerable blues label Alligator) and chewing on his Flying V strings, Toronzo had everyone’s attention. Last night, on day 2 of the festival, he jumped on stage with fellow Chicagoans Lil’ Ed and The Blues Imperials for a quick jam at The Chameleon Club. He also, after sharing some pizza and a nice stroll through downtown Lancaster, sat down with me to chat about his new album, touring on his vacation days and driving an MTA bus full time. We had to contend with fan interruptions and noise and finally ended up in a stairwell as he was kind enough to keep talking through the chaos. Toronzo’s getting a lot of well-deserved attention for his music, but don’t expect him to quit his day job!

Welcome Back Free Show with NEMES 1/21
Thursday, January 7th, 2016 by The Professor
Welcome back to campus from WLOY and Late Night Loyola! Our first FREE CONCERT of the semester will be 8-10pm in McGuire Hall, Thursday January 21st featuring NEMES from Boston! How good are they? How about: “One of the top 5 unsigned bands in the country” -Alternative Press.
Nemes (pronounced knee•miss) has made their mark on the Boston and larger New England music scene by playing everywhere from subway stations to highly-revered rock venues. Led by duel-frontmen Dave Anthony and Josh Knowles, the band showcases a true metamorphosis of sound, featuring warm, layered harmonies and one-of-a-kind violin shredding Vanyaland describes as “fiddle-action glory.” These components are delicately layered across captivating original songs to form what Under the Gun Review calls “some of the most engaging music we’ve heard,” garnering shout-outs from national and international acts such as Alt-J and Nirvana.
Released in the fall of 2015, their debut studio full-length album, “I Carry Your Heart,” has lifted the band from the subway stations of Boston to larger stages around the region, performing as support for acts such as X Ambassadors and Guster. The album was co-produced and mixed by Rick Kwan (Jim James, My Morning Jacket) and funded by a combination of busking, gigging, and crowd-funding. The 11-track record is an exploration of four minds working to create a resonant, cathartic listening experience.

More interviews to post!
Monday, October 12th, 2015 by The Professor
It’s been an insane last week here at WLOY! We’ve had Dead Flowers, Red Sammy and Jake Star all in the studio for interviews and even some music. We chatted by phone with The Sheepdogs, and (of all people) Herb Alpert! It might take us a moment to get the perfect versions of those up here, but stay tuned, we have more coming! In addition we’ve been working with local 8th graders to create and record their own radio plays! Plus, of course, tons of great music and our live shows with Canopy & Swampcandy. We’re crazy busy but don’t forget to check in and see what’s next – tickets, shows and more! Did we mention we’re going to be hosting an Open Mic Night 10/22 and showing the amazing Rocky Horror Picture Show on the quad 10/29?

WLOY Coffeehouse 10/1/15: Swampcandy
Thursday, October 1st, 2015 by WLOY Staff
It’s the 1st WLOY late night event of October! We have the amazing Swampcandy playing our WLOY coffeehouse series this Thursday. Not only is it FREE but also we’ll be providing delicious snacks AND coffee.
Swamp candy is Ruben Dobbs on guitar and Joey Mitchell on the bass. They are described as a bluesy duo. Ruben Dobb’s, a Maryland farm boy, is Swampcandy’s lead vocalist and guitarist. He has more talent in his fingers alone than I could I possibly imagine. His voice is raw, a little rough, deep, and very real. Dobbs sings his bluesy lyrics with conviction and passion. Joey Mitchell is quite the instrumental talent, maneuvering through all genres and filling the gaps of this two-person band on bass. These two are able to create music that sounds like a fully fitted band is playing along side them.
Do not miss out on this opportunity to see this dope band perform! Check out some videos and their website to get acquainted with them if you’re not already huge fans! Swampcandy
Also, at the show we will be selling raffle tickets for WLOY’s, College Radio Day give away — a turntable with 8 records (including 3 from local label Friends Records) and a $30 gift certificate to Sound Garden in Fells Point – a pretty sweet prize, if we do say so ourselves! Hope to see you there this Thursday October 2nd, buying raffle tickets, sipping on coffee and enjoying the sweet, sweet Swampcandy Tunes.

Roland Park Middle School Tours WLOY
Thursday, September 24th, 2015 by WLOY Staff
This past Monday and Tuesday, WLOY had the pleasure of hosting 60 eighth graders, along with some teachers and parents, from Roland Park Middle School. Students spent about an hour touring the station, learning about the operations, and watching DJs in action. They learned about the equipment and functions of each recording and production studio, asked lots of questions about sound dampening panels on the walls and ceilings, and tried to fathom how we got 10,000 CDs and 7,000 LPs in that small space. The students got to meet and talk to some pretty cool DJ’s while they were on the air!
These students are currently involved in Roland Park’s theater class. They are currently writing radio plays and the best ones will be selected by their teacher to record and produce them at WLOY. They will be back in October to share their plays with everyone…so be sure to tune in!! We have been fortunate enough to collaborate with Roland Park Middle on this project for 4 years. There have been some very creative plays written during our time together and we hope to inspire these young kids to be future DJs! Remember to keep an open ear for more of these creative plays in October as details emerge. Thank you, Roland Park Middle School!
