Invoke Interview

Saturday, March 5th, 2016 by The Professor

Kat and Rae continue their streak of amazing guests and interviews with the guys from Texas-based Invoke a “not classical” classical quartet. Does that make sense? No? Listen to the interview and their music and find out why it really does. They’ve won numerous awards around the country and are in town to perform with local wonder Ruut in a matinee show at Rams Head On Stage in Annapolis.

Toronzo Cannon Interview 2/27/16

Sunday, February 28th, 2016 by The Professor

Bluesman and MTA bus driver Toronzo Cannon lit up the scene at the 2016 Lancaster Roots and Blues Festival with a wild set at the Federal Taphouse to a hyped up crowd. Hitting tracks from his new Chicago Way album (his first on venerable blues label Alligator) and chewing on his Flying V strings, Toronzo had everyone’s attention. Last night, on day 2 of the festival, he jumped on stage with fellow Chicagoans Lil’ Ed and The Blues Imperials for a quick jam at The Chameleon Club. He also, after sharing some pizza and a nice stroll through downtown Lancaster, sat down with me to chat about his new album, touring on his vacation days and driving an MTA bus full time. We had to contend with fan interruptions and noise and finally ended up in a stairwell as he was kind enough to keep talking through the chaos. Toronzo’s getting a lot of well-deserved attention for his music, but don’t expect him to quit his day job!

Psycho Killers Interview

Monday, January 4th, 2016 by The Professor

Psycho Killers logo Ryan Porter, the bassist from Psycho Killers (a Baltimore Talking Heads cover band), took some time with Kat and Rae to talk about their founding, upcoming Black Friday show and just how exactly they ended up with Thomas Dolby (yes, the “She Blinded Me With Science” guy) asking to join them on stage for a show. The band performed it’s second annual fundraising event at Baltimore Soundstage to gather donations for Toys For Tots the day after Thanksgiving. This year there was the bonus of Thomas Dolby sitting in!

Allen Stone Interview

Sunday, October 11th, 2015 by The Professor

2015.04.18: Allen Stone @ The Paramount Theatre, Seattle, WA Kat & Rae (of the infamous Kat & Rae Midday show) had a nice phone chat with Allen Stone about his upcoming show (11/11 make a wish!) at Baltimore Soundstage a few days ago. Allen survived their lightning round of questions and shared the experience of being an on-demand Uber driver, among the tasty tidbits. Is it the hats, or the hair that intrigues them more? You’ll have to listen in to find out. And ignore the digital whoops and bloops that our phone system made… sorry.

St Paul & The Broken Bones Live 9/12/15

Wednesday, September 16th, 2015 by The Professor

Words & Photos by Katie Kazmierski ’18

saintpaul_rhl6 Paul Janeway of Saint Paul and the Broken Bones sauntered on stage in box-toed shoes almost more sparkly than the Rams Head lights. As he opened with the first song I knew that he wasn’t going to put on any ordinary old show, what with his incredible voice and an extremely talented band that compliments it.

Closing my eyes, I felt like I was transported back in time to the 60s when soul music was revolutionary. But instead of Otis Redding, opening my eyes I found Paul Janeway, who looks like just a normal guy—not someone you’d expect to have the extraordinarily powerful voice he does. Turns out he was once just that: a normal guy who worked as an Alabama bank teller. Lucky for us, he met current bassist Jesse Phillips (who Rachel interviews here!) in 2012 and together they embarked on a musical journey with the goal of making music that worked with Janeway’s smooth, soulful voice. (more…)
