Sir Chloe is an American indie-rock band from Bennington, Vermont now based in Los Angeles, California. They have released a total of 9 albums, recently putting out their newest piece “I Am The Dog.” Sir Chloe consists of members Dana Foote, lead singer; Teddy O’Mara, guitar; Palmer Foote, drums; Austin Holmes, keyboard; and Emma Welch, bass and vocals. The band was assembled in 2017 during Foote’s senior year of college. Instead of a usual thesis proposal, she decided to hold a concert that featured originally written works. Around 6 years later, Sir Chloe gained popularity and rose to fame in their 2020 TikTok hit “Michelle.”
I am a major fan of Sir Chloe, adding most of their tracks from “I Am The Dog” to my playlists. I especially enjoyed “Should I,” “Know Better,” and “Center.” Foote heavily builds her lyrics on perpetually confusing feelings we all have. In “Should I” she recognizes the impoliteness she feels when going for what and who she wants. She speaks of the urge to approach our crushes, repeatedly asking “Should I?”
She continues this theme in “Center” focusing her lyrics on our yearning for another. Foote refers to a “cherry-flavored surrender” in the succumbing to our desires, essentially surrendering to someone we have a “sweet spot” for. I love the lyrics of this track as she repeats “I can never get enough of you” but continues to recenter on the patience she wants to take with that person. Foote highlights the vulnerability we feel when gaining feelings and the time we owe each other in further discovering that connection. Sir Chloe’s discography resembles those of Mitski and Cage the Elephant with a slight technographic indie-pop vibe. Seriously recommend this album!
