“Live For Me” by Omar Apollo is his newest alternative pop album. Apollo’s breakthrough song “Ugotme” got about 20,000 streams a day when it first came out in 2017. He’s released several EPs like Stereo (2018), Friends (2019), and now Live For Me (2024). In 2022, he released his first debut album called Ivory and he’s had various hit singles. He was nominated for Best New Artist at the 2023 Grammys.
Apollo is known for his alternative R&B and bedroom pop style in his music. There’s elements of funk, soul, pop, and even Latin music that pays homage to his Mexican roots. This album felt more emotional and storytelling than any of his other music. Listening to this will definitely make you emotional with his powerful lyrics.
He opens this EP with “Ice Slippin” which highlights the loneliness, nostalgia, and longing vibes that go with this track. His lyrics hit deep and talk about his home life that wasn’t the easiest. “Live For Me” is easily one of my favorites, it’s a soothing song that articulates the pain of watching a loved one struggling. It’s comforting and Apollo’s voice brings everything together. “Angel” carries the same theme as the other songs, talking about losing someone young to death. Finally, his last song on the album is “Pilot”. This one is different because the beginning sounds like rap, but then flows into his usual melodies. It’s also probably the most upbeat song of the entire EP.
