Originating from Reno, Nevada, Nicholas Foster Rattigan is a versatile American artist, renowned for his talents as a singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and vocalist. Rattigan creates his music under the pseudonym “Current Joys.” His style encompasses a fusion of indie, garage rock, shoegaze, new wave, and bedroom pop influences. With an impressive discography, he’s collaborated with artists such as Lil Yachty and Slow Hollows! In addition to his solo work, Rattigan is the frontman and drummer of the surf rock band Surf Curse, adding further depth to his creative repertoire.

“LOVE + POP” is a testament to Current Joy’s capabilities. Versatility is an understatement with Rattigan as he releases his 12-track masterpiece. Each song delivers a different sound, truly exemplifying what it means for an artist to be experimental. Right off the bat, it’s clear that “LOVE + POP” is a DIY project. But don’t take that as a criticism – it’s quite the opposite. This album could only come from someone who has complete artistic freedom, letting their passion control their narrative.  Surprisingly, the outcome manages to stay cohesive, with some truly standout moments that take you to a whole new level.

Current Joys, “LOVE + POP” proudly takes WLOY’s Album of the Week. Rattigan doesn’t disappoint, creating a track for each taste. My personal favorites were definitely “Gatsby” ft. Lil Yachty and “U R THE REASON.” Both songs create contrast while lengthening the spectrum of Current Joy’s sound. “Gatsby” feeds that melodic, indie-pop sound we all love, while “U R THE REASON” delivers some EDM and fast-paced beats. Current Joy’s unpredictability is admirable.

Staff Picks: “Walk Away as the Door Slams” and “CIGARETTES”
