Alumni Spotlight: Tim Teeling (2011)

May 23rd, 2023 by Charlie Wahlberg

Tim Teeling (2011) discusses their experience at the WLOY radio station, including hosting his show “Under the Radar”, and becoming General Manager at the station.

Q: Tell us a little bit about your show.

A: I hosted a show called Under the Radar. Featuring artists spanning pop/indie/folk/Americana that didn’t make it mainstream. Later after becoming General Manager, I helped host the weekly Friday at Boulder Top 20 Countdown. Also got to pretend to be John for a few episodes of Centsable Finance.

Q: Who was your show’s top-played artist?

A: Found an old Facebook group from 2008 and it looks like Matt Nathanson and Stephen Kellogg and the Sixers.

Q: Who is your current favorite artist?

A: My children have overtaken my Spotify… My Spotify Wrapped says Encanto and Frozen. Currently, I’m into Brandi Carlile, Lucius, and Middle Kids.

Q: How did your time at WLOY transfer into your work?

A: I manage a team of web developers for a cybersecurity company. WLOY taught me lots of things that got me to where I am today! Learned how to manage people, lead others, how to talk to strangers, how to talk to famous people. More specifically my career, I designed which still uses the same CMS and theme today from 2010 much to my slight horror. I’ve been in web development ever since.

Q: Tell us about your favorite WLOY memory.

A: This one scares me at how it dates me already: Convincing John to let us use iPods instead of CDs for shows, especially for the non-stop Relay for Life events.

Q: What is one piece of insight/advice you have for current Loyola students involved at WLOY?

A: You can make your work at the station lead you down any number of career paths. After WLOY, I was able to use my experience to pay for my master’s and work at WFUV-FM at Fordham where I rebuilt their website, engineered in-studio interviews, and got to record a bunch of concerts at iconic venues in New York.
