Who Will Stop The Kansas City Chiefs?

The NFL seems to have just one major theme over the past couple of years: Can anyone take down the Kansas City Chiefs?
So far, it’s looking like no one will. The Chiefs will be playing in their 4th Super Bowl in the past 5 seasons. On top of that, it is well known that this year they have the chance to win a record setting 3rd Super Bowl in a row. Their previous 2 have come against the San Francisco 49ers last year and the Philadelphia Eagles the year before. The Chiefs will play the Eagles in the Super Bowl once again this year, only 2 years removed from their last Super Bowl matchup. These two teams have dominated regular play these last couple years. A rematch of titans, one might say.
Before talking about the Super Bowl, let’s look at how both teams got there.
The Eagles defeated the Packers in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs, 22-10. In the Divisional Round, the Eagles drew the Rams, who they had previously beat in week 12, 37-20. In their playoff rematch, the Eagles won in similar, ground and pound fashion as Eagles RB Saquon Barkley rushed for over 200 yards again, winning 28-22. In the NFC Conference Championship, the Eagles took on their NFC East division rival; the Washington Commanders.
The Eagles and Commanders rivalry spans well prior to the Super Bowl Era. Their first official meeting was October 21st, 1934, and have played each other a total of 183 times. The Commanders lead them head-to-head all time, 90-87-6. While being so historic, these teams have only just met in the playoffs twice, the most recent one being the 2024 NFC Championship. In their first ever meeting in the Conference Championship, the Eagles simply outclassed Washington, winning via their vaunted run game, scoring an historic 7 rushing touchdowns on their way to a 55-23 victory.
Being the 1 seed in the AFC, the Chiefs had a lighter road to the big game as they had a bye in the first round. In the Divisional Round they hosted a young Houston Texans team who just came off a big victory against the Los Angeles Chargers. The Texans kept the game close, it was just a 1 point game entering the fourth quarter. A close game until Mahomes magic woke up as he was forced to step up into the pocket and throw while being tackled to a miraculously open Travis Kelce for an 11-yard touchdown. The Chiefs went onto win to a score of 23-14 to advance to their 7th AFC Championship game in a row. Mahomes and the Chiefs played a familiar foe in the Buffalo Bills, this would be their 4th time meeting in the playoffs in the last 5 years.
The Bills, lead by Quarterback Josh Allen, came into this game looking for Allen’s first win over Mahomes in the playoffs. Leading up to the battle for the Super Bowl, Mahomes had a regular season record vs the Bills of 1-4 but most importantly, he was 3-0 against Buffalo in the playoffs.
It feels like every year the NFL community hopes that each year will be the year the Bills finally knock off the Chiefs. Spoiler alert: still hasn’t happened. The Chiefs beat the Josh Allen led Buffalo Bills once again in the AFC Championship game to a score of 32-29. Despite late game heroics by Allen, the Bills fell short once again, the final blow being a dropped pass by Bills Tight End Dalton Kincaid on a 4th & 5 play that could have extended a possible scoring drive with less than 2 minutes to go.
So far the Bills have consistently been the team to challenge the Chiefs, although falling short for the 4th time now. No other team has battled with them this many times, and this closely.
The question remains: will someone stop Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs this year? The Stage is set for the Eagles and Chiefs in New Orleans for Super Bowl LIX. Philadelphia look to win their 2nd Super Bowl in Franchise history and avenge their lose just 2 years ago to these same Chiefs.
Will the Eagles stop the Chiefs from making history or will Kansas City win a record 3 Super Bowls in a row. We’ll find out Sunday, February 9th at 6:30pm.
