WLOY presents “The Encore,” where we spotlight our favorite artists that have visited the station. This week: Jon Spencer!

Jon Spencer is a force of nature in the music world, renowned for his high-energy performances and creative spirit. Best known as the frontman of the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, he emerged from the vibrant NYC scene in the ’90s, blending garage rock, punk, and blues into an electrifying sound all his own. With his signature growl and captivating stage presence, he has pushed musical boundaries through his innovative work and collaborations with artists like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Sonic Youth, leaving an indelible mark on rock music.

Recently, Jon joined forces with a new group, Jon Spencer & The HITmakers, hitting the road again after a brief hiatus caused by the pandemic. About two years ago, our very own WLOY representative, Ben Ostrowski ’24, had the chance to chat with Jon before some shows that week at The Ottobar. In their conversation, they explored the excitement of the new album, the tour, and Jon’s deep appreciation for blues legend R.L.
