There was also a spinoff called “It’s A Harder Rock Life” that aired Saturdays at midnight where we played all the metal (and its 7 million subgenres) that we got yelled at for playing during the daytime show! AOTW: Hippo Campus – “Wasteland”

May 8th, 2023 by Liz Kosik

by Anabel Martin Llanusa ’25

Album of the Week: Hippo Campus“Wasteland”

Released: April 2023

Rate: 8/10

RIYL: Vampire Weekend, Ed Sheeran, Vacation Manor, COIN

Hippo Campus is an American indie rock band that recently released its newest album, Wasteland. The tracks on this album provided a light, happy melody and were primarily the reason I enjoyed it so much. Despite most of the lyrics centering around pain and love, the message is still positive and encouraging.

Some of my favorite songs were “Honeysuckle” and “Probably.” The lyrics for “Honeysuckle” are not intensely deep, but the soothing melody of the song enhances a lighter mood. “Probably” reminds me of Ed Sheeran’s, “Happier”. Both pieces have a similar tone and guitar sequence but Hippo Campus diverges with their unique addition of the piano in “Probably.” Also if you enjoy country music, “Kick in the Teeth” is a super cute love song (despite the title lol). There are only five songs on the album, so give this album an easy listen on your way to class!

Q: Can you tell us about your shows at WLOY?

A: Old Time Radio Hour, Radio Dramas: I worked with John first to figure out who had the rights to play classic radio shows (Escape, The Shadow, Yours Truly Johnny Dollar) then he pointed me in the direction of a group in Los Angeles who had old tapes of the shows. We struck a deal where we’d take the tape recordings, clean them up and send back CDs while we could record and play the shows on air. Read the rest of this entry »

Album of the Week: Yves Tumor“Praise A Lord Who Chews But Which Does Not Consume; (Or Simply, Hot Between World).

Released: March 2023

Rate: 9/10

Yves Tumor’s 5th album, “Praise A Lord”, exceeded my expectations and got a well-deserving rating of 9 out of 10. Yves Tumor is a producer and musician known for their experimental music and is originally from Knoxville, Tennessee. After spending some time in California, they were able to experiment with their sound and develop it into their current sound. Yves Tumor effortlessly intertwines shoegaze and grunge with electronic, also producing their own take on 90’s alt-rock and psychedelic rock. Read the rest of this entry »

AOTW: Charlie – “Precious Metal”

April 24th, 2023 by Liz Kosik

by Amelia Dunat ’25

Album of the Week: Charlie“Precious Metal”

Released: March 1, 2023

Rate: 8/10

RIYL: Slowdive, Duster, Deftones, Smashing Pumpkins

Charlie is a 3-piece band from Tampa, Florida, and “Precious Metal” is their debut album! I discovered it during my weekly music reviews and I ended up adding all the songs to the library. Their sound is reminiscent of 90’s alt-rock and shoegaze, and this compilation of 10 songs sounded perfect together. This album is only 29 minutes long so it is definitely worth giving the whole piece a listen. Read the rest of this entry »
