WLOY Cleans Up San Antonio

Monday, November 4th, 2013 by The Professor

7 trophies CBI 2013

When we got to the National Student Electronic Media Convention in San Antonio, they had all these trophies lying around messing up the place. It seemed a shame to mess up a nice looking city like San Antonio, and since we care about that kind of stuff, we helped make it nice and neat. Taking the trophies back to Baltimore seemed the best plan.

RadioEdu Week 06

Concept: Delay review, Introduction to Echo

Continuing with the students’ introduction to effects and effect chains, this week we learned about Echo. The students immediately noted that the interface of the Echo plug-in is similar to the Delay, and that many of the parameters are the same. We then began to highlight the distinctions and at the end of the session, the students were able to identify the differences and brainstorm about when they would use each.

As with the other effects, we began by loading an audio sample of a guitar on a track with Echo on the rack. I had each student choose a preset from the menu and predict what it would sound like, and then analyze the parameters on the plug-in. The students were able to note the relationship between the ‘Delay Time’ parameter and how apparent the Echo would become.

Proof of Concept: This week was mainly theoretical and focused on linking what they saw on the preset parameters and predicting how the guitar sample would be changed. The students demonstrated that they understood the impact of ‘Delay Time’ by noting that the longer the delay, the longer they would continue to hear audio after the initial sample ceased to play. This was very impressive, and we further solidified the concept by having each student say “Happy Halloween” at the same time, and then each of them stagger when they would begin. The result was similar to the echo created on the track, which led to comparisons to ‘Row, Row, Row Your Boat,’ and how Echo can be considered similarly.

J decided to record a new version of his ‘Top Ten’ list, this week bringing a ‘Top Ten Pokemon’ installment. This was an excellent way for him to practice his ‘live radio show’ skills, as he did this entire list is largely spontaneous. He is continuing to work on designing a ‘Top Ten’ segment as a regular feature for an eventual radio show segment, and this list demonstrates his increasing comfort and confidence on the mic, as well as his technical skills regarding talking into the mic. Mic awareness is one of the ‘unseen’ skills that the students are continuing to develop, and this recording demonstrates a growing mindfulness in regard to these technical studio aspects.

Leslie-Cam at CBI San Antonio

Wednesday, October 30th, 2013 by The Professor

Leslie_WLOY_GoProYep, we’re putting a GoPro camera on top of Leslie’s usual pink kitty helmet and sending her to San Antonio, Texas to see what she can find at the National Student Electronic Media Convention.  We don’t know what will happen, or how the TSA will like this… but we hope she’ll get some good footage as we collect 5 national awards, and perhaps go for a swim in the rooftop hotel.  Who knows what she’ll bring back?  Yes, we’re odd. But really that’s why you love us isn’t it?

Follow the camera exploits on our Facebook and Twitter accounts.  Look for the #CBITexas tags for news and happenings from the conference.  Let’s hope Leslie has as much fun with this as we’re already having.

BTW, you can listen to Leslie and her co-host (and roommate at the conference) Kathleen on their show Privetz every Monday 7-8pm.  But you can catch WLOY Live from San Antonio on Friday this week 12-2pm EST.

UPDATE: Video is up on our Facebook page.  It’s kinda NSFW and kinda insane thanks to Leslie’s frenetic MTV-vs.-Blair-Witch style of editing.  Try not to laugh… we dare you.  This font is pink because… Leslie.

Beach Fossils and Kurt Vile at Ottobar

Tuesday, October 29th, 2013 by WLOY Staff

On Sunday, October 27th my travels took me to a local favorite, The Ottobar. The grungy little bar featuring a tiny  stage, and an equally small dance floor to match is one of the best venues in the city to see live music, and on Sunday, Beach Fossils and Kurt Vile shared the stage.

Review: Linkin Park – Recharged

Linkin Park

[itunes link=”https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/a-light-that-never-comes/id701162375?uo=4″ title=””]

Grade: D

The rock band, Linkin Park released its second remix album, Recharged, on October 29, 2013. The album fell short from the band’s usual numetal sound. It was manufactured, and not as organic as the band’s usual sound. The remix album sounds very dubstep, which usually would be a great thing to add to a rock sound. (more…)

Humming House Review

Monday, October 28th, 2013 by WLOY Staff

HH-Cover-3000x3000-300x300It’s rare nowadays to hear a folk band that sounds truly authentic and not just like a Mumford and Sons rip-off band. Humming House sticks out among these other folk bands as a rarity. They are talented, entertaining, melodic and above all, authentic. Humming House is a Nashville-based, string quintet consisting of the upright bass, guitar, banjo, ukelele and various other instruments. Perhaps the reason why they sound so authentic is that their sound is a unique blend of American and Irish folk, bluegrass and even soul. Their debut album is a raucous good time that will transport you to a dance hall somewhere deep in the boondocks. For example, it is virtually impossible to listen to their song “Gypsy Django” and not want to clap, dance and sing along. Conversely, “When the Dawn Becomes the Day” is a soft, mellow song that is perfect for laying back, relaxing and enjoying the sheer musical and lyrical talent of Humming House. This quintet is sure to entertain and is a gem in the folk music scene. They are currently on tour so be sure to go on their website to see if they are coming to a city near you.
