Music News: Rihanna’s Return to the Stage
Monday, December 5th, 2022 by Liz Kosik
by Liz Kosik ’25
For all Rihanna fans – our time has come! The superstar has ended her 6-year hiatus with the official announcement that she will be performing at the Super Bowl LVII Halftime Show this upcoming February. Rihanna is responsible for some of our generation’s favorite pop songs, including “We Found Love” (feat. Calvin Harris), “Umbrella” (feat. Jay-Z), and “Pon De Replay.” Her many albums conclude with “Anti” which was released in early 2016. Fans have been starving for music updates from the megastar, billionaire, and new mom and I can promise we won’t be disappointed. While Rihanna has produced nearly 2 decades of iconic music, it will definitely be exciting to see her back in her artistic element. This Super Bowl will not be one to miss!

From October 27-30th, the WLOY staff attended the highly anticipated National Student Electronic Media Conference (NSEMC) that took place in Baltimore this year! More than 300 students involved in college radio and TV stations all over the country came together to connect with each other and learn more about the TV and radio industry.
Thursday’s sessions and panels took place with topics ranging from navigating through the post-pandemic world, women’s sports, and how to better engage with your audience. Staff and station advisers also met in roundtable discussions to talk about different ways to improve their respective stations and get feedback from other admins. At the end of the day, all attendees gathered in the Diamond Tavern at the Baltimore Hilton Hotel for the swag swap, where stations traded stickers, t-shirts, tote bags, and every kind of merch you can think of with each other. The staff came back to the station with a whole box of merchandise from stations all over the country! (more…)

Alvvays – “Blue Rev”
Released: October 7, 2022
Rating: 7 / 10
This Toronto band’s third album has been in the works since their 2017 album Antisocialites and it was definitely worth the wait. Alvvays is an Indie Pop band from Canada formed in 2011. After a 5-year hiatus, they’ve released Blue Rev, a shoegaze collection of 14 tracks, all with bittersweet lyrics and psychedelic sounds. My favorite tracks from this album were “Easy on Your Own”, “Tile by Tile”, and “After the Earthquake”. “After the Earthquake” was my favorite out of all of them because of its upbeat melody. “Easy on your Own” and “Tile by Tile” both feature whimsical vocals and sophisticated melodies making them sound just like the previous albums. Listening to this album made it seem as if no time had passed since I last heard the sounds of Alvvays many years ago! (more…)

The opener for Iron Maiden was amazing and really energized the audience. Within Temptation is a Dutch metal band founded in 1996. The main vocalist, Sharon den Adel, has the most beautiful voice and an amazing stage presence. Within Temptation performed their most popular songs such as “Faster”, “Don’t Pray for Me” and “Angels”. If you have not heard any songs by Within Temptation and like Iron Maiden, you will for sure love them! With an amazing start to the concert, Within Temptation really hyped up the crowd for Iron Maiden. (more…)

Jonathan Jeremiah – “Horsepower For The Streets”
Release: September, 2022
Rated: 9/10
RIYL: Lord Huron, Hozier, Donovan Woods, Family of the Year, Bronze Radio Return.
If you love music that sounds like an orchestra with the violins, piano and chorus in the back, then this is the album for you. When I first heard Horsepower For The Streets, I was in shock. I thought Hozier and Sam Smith were the only ones that knew how to mix Pop music with Soul. (more…)
