Cullen Omori- New Misery

Friday, March 11th, 2016 by WLOY Staff

cover170x170-2Cullen Omori– New Misery

Released: March 18, 2016

Rate: 6/10

Cullen Omori is coming out with a new album March 18. New Misery is heavily synth driven, and generally a very chill album. Omori sounds like a slightly darker version of the band “Swmrs” mixed with a blast from the past. The production of the album is very well done, the guitar tone is amazing, and every instrument fits in perfectly. Though this may be a plus, I wish the album had more depth to it, the album just seems to be dragging along, I would love to hear more drums, or even a tonal difference in Omori’s voice, some more character or ”attitude”. The laid back attitude can sometimes get very mundane. Other than that, I think the album is a very good, one, you can tell that Omori has developed his sound and the type of music he enjoys playing. He is just starting out and I think he has a lot of room for growth and a bright future ahead.

Sugar Free Allstars – Sugar Free Allstars

15298 SFAS Album CoverSugar Free Allstars – Sugar Free Allstars

Released:  April 2, 2016

Rate: 6/10

Sugar Free Allstars self-titled album comes out April 2nd. The children’s artist takes a more new wave approach to children’s music. While some children’s music can be acoustic and pretty low-key, Sugar Free Allstars has elements of disco, jazz, blues, and funk that collectively make up their songs. This makes them very upbeat, akin to the personality and activity of young children. Their music is also something that adults can get into to, so if you have you’re on a long car ride and pop this album in, you can groove along as well. Sugar Free Allstars, is definitely unique in the world of Children’s music in that again it does appeal to many different age groups, their sound is to get you up to move and groove. The production is very good on the album and lyrically, it is very children friendly and easy to understand. Looking for a break from traditional children’s music? I would definitely get this album!

Release Date: April 1, 2016

Rate: 8/10

Frances England, a children’s artist releases her new album Explorer of the World is absolutely fun and whimsical. England’s voice is absolutely perfect for children’s music, the primarily acoustic album is not only good for children but is also something adults can get into as well. Her voice is light airy and absolutely infectious, her songs are simply cute and you can’t help but to smile. The production on the album is fairly good, but the songs and the vibe of the songs makes up tremendously for the decent production. If you have kids, or just want music to chill too, I would definitely check this album out!

DJ Spotlight: Legends of Rock Album Review

Friday, October 23rd, 2015 by WLOY Staff

white snake album cover Whitesnake’s new album The Purple Album, released earlier in 2015, shows that after a 35+ year career, they still have relevance today, and are still very talented. This album shows the band’s musical flexibility, with styles ranging from metal, to soft rock, to their more familiar classic rock feel. It should be said that I am only really familiar with their more commercially successful songs, specifically Still of the Night and Here I Go Again, so I am not aware of the band’s evolution in style over the years. However, this does give me a clear perspective on their skill and the quality of the music on this new album. (more…)

The Kooks Go In A New Direction For Their Fourth Studio Album

Wednesday, September 17th, 2014 by WLOY Staff

Listen_The_Kooks_cover The Kooks: Listen

Release Date: 9/8/14

Rating: 8/10

Well, well, well, it looks like the Kooks are gettin’ kind of funky here. Listen has been described as having some ska and even hip-hop influences from this traditionally indie rock band from Britain. This is such a deviation from their norm that if Luke Prichard didn’t have such a unique voice, this album wouldn’t even be recognizable as the Kooks. Because of that, this newest release rubs some people the wrong way, but personally I can dig it. (more…)

What Is The WLOY Staff Listening To?

Thursday, April 24th, 2014 by WLOY Staff

hqdefaultRachel Stoczko – Hozier – From Eden EP – [itunes link=”https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/arsonists-lullabye/id855326898?uo=4″ title=”Itunes”]

This newly released EP from Irish artist, Hozier, has been on repeat since I discovered it last week. I first heard Hozier on Teen Wolf, judge me, with his work from his first EP, and his second certainly does not disappoint. I cannot stop listening to the hauntingly beautiful tones and intricate lyrics of all four songs off the new EP. Give it a listen and melo out.

Top 20 Tracks 4.20.14

Thursday, April 24th, 2014 by WLOY Staff

Jamie-xx-Girl-300x150This week we have the highly anticipated “Girl” topping our chart. The xx producer/percussionist released his fourth solo single earlier this week, and it’s thumping bass and reverb vocal makes dancing to this track almost irresistible. Also on our chart is another cut off of Mac DeMarco’s Salad Days, as well as tUnE-yArDs’ “Water Fountain” which received an extremely psychedelic music video this week (check it out here). And more important than all of that, check back every week for our updated Top 20!
