What Is The WLOY Staff Listening To?

Thursday, March 13th, 2014 by WLOY Staff

Unknown Kate Marshall – Soko – “We Might Be Dead By Tomorrow” – I Thought I Was An Alien
I was watching this really endearing video of 20 strangers that were paired up to kiss for the first time (trust me, you don’t get second hand embarrassment that you assume would come with watching that…check it out here) and about 30 seconds in, this hauntingly beautiful song chimes in with the line “if you’re not ready for love, how can you be ready for life” and I was instantly hooked to this french singer/songwriter. Paired with the video, the videographer and artist created such a charming and intimate moment I wasn’t really expecting at all.

What Is The WLOY Staff Listening To This Week?

Thursday, February 27th, 2014 by WLOY Staff

3724697Leslie Weis – 5 Seconds of Summer – [itunes link=”https://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/5-seconds-of-summer/id538811449?uo=4″ title=”Itunes”]
More accents and boybands!! Woohoo! This pop rock band, 5 Seconds of Summer, comprised of four adorable Aussies is pretty new to the scene and as well as millions of other girls all around the world, I’m obsessed. 5 Seconds of Summer began in December 2011 when Luke Hemmings, Michael Clifford and Calum Hood joined together and started posting videos of themselves performing covers of popular songs to YouTube. A little bit later they were joined by drummer Ashton Irwin, and the current 5 Seconds of Summer lineup came to be. Last February, 5 Seconds of Summer announced that they’d be the opening act on One Direction’s worldwide arena tour and hysteria among all teenage girls immediately ensued. The boys are now currently signed to Capitol Records and are working on their debut album. Their new single, She Looks So Perfect, has just made me even more addicted and it’s starting to become unhealthy and kind of scaring me.

What Are We Listening To This Week?

Thursday, February 20th, 2014 by WLOY Staff

maxresdefaultRachel Stoczko – Hey OceanIf I Were A Ship – [itunes link=”https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/if-i-were-a-ship/id584597270?i=584597285&uo=4″ title=”Itunes”]

This super fun song, that’s a single track off their 2013 album IS, is the epitome of Hey Ocean!. The Vancouver based band is fun loving and they provide feel good music that just makes you want to dance. In January they released an animated video to accompany “If I Were A Ship” and it’s basically the most adorable an animated music video can get. Give them a listen, dance along and fall in love, like I have.

Wednesday, February 19th, 2014 by WLOY Staff

mac-demarco.jpg?w=580This week we still have Mac DeMarco topping our chart, but there are a few new additions. A new song by Austin, Texas band Pure X is so dreamy and surfy that you’d never believe that those kids grew up hundreds of miles from the closest beach. Also on our chart is a huge pop track from ceo, and a new track by WOODS. Check back every week for even more great new tracks.

What Is The WLOY Staff Listening To?

Thursday, February 6th, 2014 by WLOY Staff

inside-llewyn-davis-original-soundtrack-338-300Joe Lomuti – Inside Llewyn Davis OST – Oscar Isaac – [itunes link=”https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/fare-thee-well-dinks-song/id712838705?uo=4″ title=”Itunes”]

It is definitely hard to see through the biases associated with movie sound track albums. Why spend money on a collection of juxtaposed songs that seem but lost independent of their movie origin? However, with the release of the new Coen Brothers film Inside Lleywn Davis, my perceptions have been swayed. Based in NYC circa 1960, the film follows the character of Lleywn Davis–a vagabond folk musician surfing couches of the East Village struggling to demonstrate his talent and find his place in life. The film’s soundtrack was created like any other studio album and more so. Tracks include appearances by Mumford & and Sons, JT, and The Punch Brothers, all lead by notable music producer and composer T-Bone Burnett. However, don’t let all these big names shadow Oscar Isaac, the lead actor and recording musician for multiple tracks including one of my favorites “Hang me, Oh Hang me”. If you enjoy folk music, or just good art in general, both the sound track and film are definitely worth checking out.
