The Courettes Interview

Wednesday, September 27th, 2023 by The Professor

The fabulous Courettes (Martin and Flavia Couri) from Denmark sat down with me to chat about their upcoming tour in the US, their new US-only orange vinyl release “Boom! Dynamite” and more. We discussed their home studio that they designed to recreate the infamous Wall of Sound from legendary producer (and dangerous lunatic) Phil Spector. Timed perfectly to be ready for the pandemic, they were able to hardness the lockdown to write and record more songs for an upcoming album. Catch them at the Runway in DC 10/3 or right here in town at the Metro Gallery in Baltimore on 10/4 with DJ Rob Macy and The Flying Faders. It’s going to be a blast. They may even stop by the station!

Stay tuned to learn how you can win one of the 1000 limited edition orange vinyl copies of Boom! Dynamite before it even reaches the stores!

Join 2/3 of the local shoegaze band The Holy Circle for a new Studio Seizure tonight at 7! Terence and Rob (Erica was busy building a classroom) stopped by the station with armloads of vinyl to spin a great blend of shoegaze and “shoegaze adjacent” bands.

We chatted about their upcoming show this weekend (9/2 at The Crown) and the start of a cool new event Dreamgaze that they will be hosting at the Crown. Expect a ton of great rare shoegaze bands in this episode and maybe a couple you know as well.

SOTW: Computerwife – “You Make It Look So Easy”

Tuesday, August 22nd, 2023 by Liz Kosik

by Liz Kosik ’25

Song of the Week: Computerwife“You Make It Look So Easy”

Released: August 2023

Rate: 8/10

RIYL: Wyatt Smith, Fleeting Joys, Toner, Devilish Dear

Originating from New York City, Addie Warncke started Computerwife in 2018 during her time at university. Using SoundCloud as an outlet, Warncke compares her earlier music to a diary for her thoughts. In 2020, Addie released her favorite five songs as her debut EP, which led to a contract with Danger Collective Records, all thanks to the strength of her tracks. Computerwife’s music is truly fascinating and intricate, challenging the limits between analog and digital sound. By combining shoegaze, emo, and lo-fi noise pop, Computerwife speaks directly to young girls who feel unease with their identity in the age of digital media.

Computerwife’s “You Make It Look So Easy” perfectly aligns with the theme of Warncke’s music. This track showcases her coming back to herself, really nailing the purpose behind her sound. “You Make It Look So Easy” explores the relatability of our adoration turning into envy when admiring another. As we are constantly exposed to the lives of complete strangers, Warncke creates a relatively heavier and tense track, encapsulating the jealousy that is produced when wishing you had someone else’s life. I enjoy Computerwife’s music and definitely have a few of her tracks on my playlist. The message behind her discography is essential and can be highly influential when dangerously glorifying the appearance of another’s life.

Staff Picks: “Happy Girl” and “Hehehe”

Alumni Spotlight: Anthony Medina (2013)

Tuesday, August 8th, 2023 by Liz Kosik

Anthony Medina, a graduate of Loyola University in 2013, reflects on his career, life, and time spent at Loyola. Medina shares some updates on his life while cherishing his WLOY days.

Q: Can you tell us about your show at WLOY? (name and theme, genre of music)

A:  I co-hosted a show on WLOY with one of my best friends, Jeff Poulos AKA Dj Pool Party Poulos. We called the show Know Your Role after one of Dwayne “The

Rock” Johnson’s famous catchphrases from the late ’90s. I’ve always been a diehard professional wrestling fan and Jeff and I bonded over our love of some of the all-time greats. I actually think he came up with the name. We played classic rock and had gimmicks like top 5 lists and running jokes. And at the end of every show, we’d tell someone that needed to hear to know their role. All the bits and banter and promos were such a fun and creative outlet for us. But it was really just another excuse to spend time with my friend. And I think our friendship was the cohesive element of the show that made it work. People picked up on our connection and friendship and I think it made those who listened smile.
