Theater Thursdays: The Screen Painters w/ Little Castles

Thursday, June 13th, 2013 by WLOY Staff

TheScreenPaintersThursday, June 20th

Creative Alliance at the Patterson

An artform born and raised here in good ol’ Bawlmore, Screen Painting is celebrating its 100th birthday (hey, that’s 10 times more than us!). To celebrate this unique and beautiful art form, the film The Screen Painters will be shown at the Creative Alliance at the Patterson. In short, homeowners would commission screen painters to create intricate designs on the doors of local homes so that passersby could not see in. Following the film will be a discussion with cinematographer Richard Chilsom and other scholars. The film is $12 dollars and will also feature the premiere of the film Little Castles – a film on Baltimore’s Formstone. Be sure to join the Creative Alliance again on Saturday, June 22nd for a tour of the Painted Screens of East Baltimore, costings $35. This event, unique to Baltimore, is one you certainly do not want to miss.

For more information, visit the Creative Alliance’s website.

Sports Saturday: Mud Run?

Sunday, March 17th, 2013 by WLOY Staff

Mud Run
Have you ever wanted to push yourself to the max? On May 5th, your dreams may finally come true.

Straight from the website, www.TerrapinMudRun.com, they say,

“Terrapin Adventures is teaming up with Playworks Baltimore to put together a 5K mud run to help raise money to bring recess to schools in the Baltimore area. The Terrapin and the Hare Mud Run is a fun, high intensity, obstacle course run through the woods of Savage, Maryland.

Starting at Terrapin Adventures, the Terrapin and the Hare will include 5 Kilometers of very tough terrain and will contain obstacles such as, climbing walls, tires, webs, and, of course, mud. This race is not for the weak of heart. If you like a challenge and some food topped off with a beer from the Rams Head Tavern at the finish, then the Terrapin and the Hare is the race for you. Come run, jump, climb and get muddy for recess on May 6. Bringing the family? Playworks coaches will provide games and activities for the kids while you run the course.”

So what else is there really to say but, “I am going for it, Anthony (that’s me, the Sports Director)”

For more information, go to www.TerrapinMudRun.com for prices and sign up information.

Sports Saturdays: Tuesday and Thursday Runs at Goucher College

Saturday, March 16th, 2013 by WLOY Staff

running-away

Sometimes, it is better to actually participate in an athletic activity than just catch the highlights on ESPN. Sometimes, it is better to just try and meet some friends and run somewhere.

Yes, running, America’s Past Time….I mean, America’s…thing we should all do once and a while.

At Goucher College, every Tuesdays and Thursdays, the BRRC Club runs along the trails that surround Goucher. Goucher graciously allows for private individuals to coordinate with each other and take recreational runs together. Runs are mostly at night and it is often smart to check ahead of time to make sure their is a run going on.

Now, the event is perfect for all levels. Beginners will often be able to run with each other and as you get more comfortable, along with your body becoming more acclimated to long distance running, you can move up with the next level and so on.

It is a great way to relax and de-stress and happens to be on key days of the week when stress is at its maximum
