Theater Thursdays: Moby Dick or the Water Ballet Spectacular

Fluid Movement, a Baltimore-based performing arts group, returns with its 12th annual water ballet and, this time, it’s personal! It’s Moby Dick or The Water Ballet! The story, which draws heavily from Hemingway’s Mellville’s (We have harpooned the author as a result of this gaffe) famous work about Ishmael, a poor sailor, as he joins Captain Ahab on a search wretched white whale is set to water by a group of “sparkly-and-ironic” synchronized swimmers as they hunt and harpoon the antagonist. Will any of them make it to Nantucket alive? You’ll have to experience the splendor of the open sea to find out. You’ll find this all out without leaving the comforts of your favorite Baltimore City Public Pool. Be sure to check this event out, July 27th and 28th at the Druid Hill Park Pool, or August 3rd and 4th at the Patterson Park Pool. Tickets are $10 or $5 for city pool pass holders. Also, the July 27th show is half price! Doors open 30 minute before the show, so make sure you show up early and are prepared for the seaward journey of a lifetime.

Wacky Wednesdays: Best of Baltimore Speakeasy Party

Need a drink, dollface? Put on your best suit or flapper dress and head down to the speakeasy for the 25th annual Best of Baltimore Party presented by Baltimore Magazine. This event, which is feather and fringe optional, will feature eats from the area’s best restaurants, handcrafted cocktails, fine wines,and specialty beers to quench your palette. COVERGIRL will also be there for free makeup giveaways. There will be aerial burlesque and live music from Burnt Sienna and DJ Kopec. Plus, there’s still time to purchase VIP tickets to ensure you get even more great giveaways. Proceeds from the event will even be going to The Family Tree which works with families to prevent child abuse and neglect. Tickets are $80 in advance for general admission and $135 in advance for VIP. Get your tickets before they sell out because this event is guaranteed to be a great time.

Tourism Tuesdays: Gizmos, Gadgets, and Gears at the Maryland Science Center

The Maryland Science Center is the perfect getaway for kids. I remember my first trip to the center, when I was at the tender age of 15, was one that was really exciting and fun. This museum / all around fun center has tons of great exhibits for all patrons to learn about anything from the human body to the solar system. Plus, the center is located right in the Inner Harbor so it could be a part of your day trip downtown. From now until Labor Day, the Maryland Science Center will be offering a new exhibit, titled Gizmos Gadgets and Gears. The main premise of this exhibit is to have patrons engineer contraptions from other objects. Do you think you can turn a mouse-trap into a race-car? Can you make a helicopter out of a rubber band and some popsicle sticks? Have you ever made and used a pin-hole camera? Or thought about turning an old CD into art? This new exhibit will certainly get your creative juices flowing. Think you’ve got the imagination? Then head down to the Maryland Science Center. If you’ve got kids of your own, you’re just babysitting someone else’s, or you want to let out the kid inside of you, this tourist spot is one you definitely want to check out.

Museum Mondays: Ashe to Amen

Reginald F. Museum of Maryland African American History and Culture –
The traveling exhibition, Ashe to Amen: African Americans and Biblical Imagery is currently being shown at the Reginald F. Museum of Maryland African American History and Culture until September 29th. The exhibition, curated by Leslie King-Hammond, Ph.D., graduate dean emerita and founding director of the Center for Race and Culture at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), will present African-American artists’ interpretations of Biblical stories and traditions through historic and contemporary art at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History & Culture. Ashe to Amen is among the first scholarly explorations into how the Bible has informed the multicultural African-American community’s evolving artistic expression. This exhibit will showcase a wide range of expressions of faith and the interpretations of African American Christians. It will follow the themes of creation, revelation, faith, liberation, and identity by exploring works of African American artists dating as far back to the late 19th century. This exhibit promises to be very beautiful and interesting.

Sports Saturdays: Downtown Sailing Center Open House

Ahoy mateys! Have you ever wanted to try out sailing but didn’t think you were pirate enough to do it? Well go and get your sea legs and head down to the Downtown Sailing Center’s open house on August 10th from 10AM to 1PM. The open house is completely free and at it you can learn about membership, classes, summer day camp, and much more. Registration is encouraged to ensure you get a spot for your maiden voyage. Tours will run each hour so make sure you check the time you want to sign up is full. The center has various youth and adult programs which you can learn about during this open house. The center also accepts members with all levels of experience, from no experience to experts.

Food Fridays: Surf and Turf Summertime Fun Festival

Come out July 20th to enjoy a Maryland State favorite, surf and turf. The Carroll Country Farm Museum is proud to present the Surf and Turf Summertime Fun Festival for another year running from 2-7pm. This event will be sure to satisfy your seafood craving with some of Maryland’s famous crabs. Food and drink will be provided, and beer sales will be held my the Knights of Columbus. The event will also feature various craft vendors, a horseshoe competition, farmhouse toys, classic car displays, and old-fashioned children’s games, among other things. Admission is $5.00 for adults, $4.00 for kids ages 7-18 and adults ages 60 and over, and free for children 6 and under. This will surely be a fun and relaxing summer event.

Theater Thursdays: Hamlet

Considered by many to be Shakespeare’s greatest work, Hamlet is a tragedy of murder and revenge on the fringes of sanity. The Baltimore Shakespeare Factory will run this production at two different venues from July 13th to August 4th. Baltimore Shakespeare Factory’s Hamlet runs for one weekend indoors and three weekends outdoors in the Meadow at the Evergreen Library and Museum. These outdoor performances will be held rain or shine. So, bring your own chair and an umbrella for shade or sprinkles. In the event of heavy rain or storms, shows will be held and the company will attempt to restart if possible. If weather does not permit, or for any other reason, cancellations will be announced no sooner than 2 hours prior to curtain on the company’s website. Guests are also welcome to picnic on the lawn prior to and during the show. Finally, on August 3rd, join the company for a special “Marathon on the Meadow” where patrons can view the company’s productions of “Hamlet” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”

Wacky Wednesdays: Seersucker and Sundresses Garden Party

The Rawlings Conservatory and Botanic Gardens are pleased to present their inaugural Garden party, themed “Seersucker and Sundresses.” As mentioned, this event will feature croquet, picnic fare, music, and a good, relaxing time for the entire family. The event, which will be held rain or shine, is guarenteed to be an evening of elegance. For adults, tickets will be $35 and for children 12 and under, the price is $10. The event is also offering a special package for families totaling $80 (up to 2 adults and multiple children). This special event is meant as a fundraiser for this historic Baltimore landmark, celebrating its 125th anniversary.

Tourism Tuesdays: Beaver Dam Swimming Club

While your local pool may be a great way to beat the Baltimore Summer heat, for many, myself included, the crowded conditions and screams of children just doesn’t cut it. And lets be honest, that backyard sprinkler hasn’t cooled you down since you were about 6 years old. Plus, everybody hates all the stupid rules to “prevent you from injuring yourself.” The Beaver Dam Swimming Club isn’t your typical swim getaway. This local, Summer spot is actually a swimming hole that “aims to bring the fun back into jumping into a really large puddle.” This club has spots for rope swings, cliff jumping, and more. Plus, if you get tired of swimming, you can head over to the basketball and volleyball courts for some dry fun. This swim club is comprised of 30 acres of freshwater quarries, pools, and ropes swings for people of all ages to enjoy. Plus, the swim club has a snack stand and shaded areas for patrons to enjoy a nice family cookout or picnic. After checking the Beaver Dam Swimming Club out, you will be sure to have found your new summer hangout.

Museum Mondays: Artscape

13 City Blocks. 175 Tents. Over 30 Countries represented. Artscape returns to Baltimore again as America’s largest free arts festival, attracting over 350,000 attendees. For its 32nd year, Artscape will provide patrons with an eclectic collection of performing and visual arts at no cost. Artscape features more than 150 fine artists, fashion designers, and craftspeople; visual art exhibits, outdoor sculptures, art cars, and photographs. On top of all that, there will be incredible live concerts on outdoor stages. The event will also feature a full schedule of performing arts, including dance, opera, theater, film, experimental music, and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. This event is targeted to families as well through hands-on projects, demonstrations, competitions, children’s entertainers, and street theater. A diverse, international selection of food vendors will also be featured throughout the event for patrons to try. The subject matter of events ranges from the design of video games, to cocktails, and even the Japanese art of song. Finally, on Saturday, Mayor Rawlings-Blake will present the eight annual Janet and Walter Sondheim prize, valuing $25,000 to further artistic endeavors, to one lucky finalist, followed by a special reception. This three day event promises to be exciting and engaging and will surely leave you looking forward to next years.
This event will have street closures, so be sure to plan your trip ahead.
