Museum Monday: New Contemporary Wing to Reopen at the Baltimore Museum of Art

Can’t wait any longer to see the new pieces at the Baltimore Museum of Art? Well, you don’t have to wait much longer! The new contemporary wing is set to reopen on November 18th! Over 15 galleries in over 35,000 square feet will be revealed for the public to enjoy. New exhibits featuring artist Zwelethu Mthethwa as well as digital artists Allora & Cazadilla just to name a few. The best part about these news exhibits is that they, along with the rest of the museum is all free! So come to the Baltimore Museum of Art to enjoy the new artwork!

Museum Mondays: Won’t You Celebrate With Me?

This exhibit honors the Life and Poetic Legacy of Lucille Clifton portrayed through the photographs of Lynda Koolish in conjunction with Furious Flower Poetry Center, James Madison University. Lucille Clifton exhibits the epitome of a life well lived, which is depicted in this exhibit. You are invited to get to know former Maryland Poet Laureate this Museum Monday!

Museum Mondays: Betascape

Betascape is a weekend-long exploratorium for artists and technologists who love to work at the intersection of art and technology. Get inspired with two days of lectures and hands-on learning and creating. Experts from across the East Coast will share their stories and expertise. Registration is $75 and includes full access to talks and labs, as well as 2 meals per day and a T-shirt. Student discounts are offered.

Museum Monday: AVAM’s Flicks from the Hill

Come picnic under the stars and catch a FREE film at AVAM‘s summer series, “Flicks from the Hill.” On Thursday nights, as the city lights begin illuminate the Baltimore skyline, you can watch a movie inspired by the museum’s current exhibition, ALL THINGS ROUND: Galaxies, Eyeballs & Karma. Also, unbeknownst to many, the museum offers free admission on movie nights from 5-9pm.

Museum Monday – The Story of Apple, Inc.

The National Electronics Museum is hosting ‘A is for Apple! The Story of Apple, Inc.’ until October 31st. The exhibit highlights the beginning stages of the company, its goals and priorities, and its innovations in the electronics market, as well as the admirable business strategies of Steve Jobs. Visualize the evolution of the company with replicas of Apple products over the years, including a replica of the first ever Apple computer, and check out an archive of the company’s innovative advertisements. General admission is $3, student and senior admission is $1, and children under 5 are admitted for free. The museum is open from 9-4 Monday through Friday, and 10-2 on Saturdays.

Museum Monday: Hashiguchi Goyo’s Beautiful Women

Hashiguchi Goyo was a Japanese ukiyo-e printmaker who met an untimely death in 1921. During the last two years of his life, he carefully monitored the production of his final prints, eight of which would become some of his most important works. These images of Japanese women, along with a few posthumous prints completed by Goyo’s brother, are on display in the Walters Art Museum every Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 10am-5pm until August 12.

Museum Monday: Sondheim Artscape Exhibit

Sondheim Artscape Prize 2012 Finalists are coming to the Baltimore Museum of Art from June 16, 2012 – July 29, 2012
 for a free exhibition.

In conjunction with Artscape, Baltimore’s premier arts festival organized by the Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts, the BMA presents a special exhibition of works by the finalists for the Janet & Walter Sondheim Artscape Prize.

Named after the late Baltimore civic leader Walter Sondheim and his late wife, Janet, the Sondheim Prize recognizes the achievements of visual artists living or working in Maryland, Washington, D.C., Northern Virginia, and southeastern Pennsylvania. This prestigious award is designed to assist visual artists or visual artist collaborators in furthering their careers by awarding a $25,000 fellowship.

The semi-finalists, finalists, and winner are all chosen by an independent panel of jurors. The winner of the $25,000 prize will be announced on July 14 at the BMA. Artscape is held July 20-22, 2012. Presented by the Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts in partnership with The Baltimore Museum of Art.

Museum Monday: Public Property at The Walters

This summer, the Walters Art Museum will present Public Property, an exhibition collectively created by the public. In 1931, the museum’s founder Henry Walters bequeathed the core collection of the Walters to the City of Baltimore “for the benefit of the public.” The Walters’ art is owned by the public, and it is the public who will determine what this exhibition will be.
