35 Years of Loyola Radio!

We’re celebrating 35 years of radio at Loyola this Saturday! It’s the exact day in 1975 when WVLC (The Voice of Loyola College) first signed on to broadcast in the cafeteria. It evolved into WLCR and ran until the mid 1990s before being wiped out in the renovation of the Student Center. In 2002 we restarted WLOY and in March of 2003 we went 24/7/365 and haven’t looked back. Now we are, along with lots of station alumni from the 70’s and 80’s. Listen in from 1-7pm on Saturday to check out all the DJs as they get back on the air again! We’ve got their original jingle and even their original vinyl!

A live special edition of Both Feet In! Dr. Sylvia Park speaks with Monifa Wilson about her job working with homeless youth in Baltimore City. She shares what it’s like working as a Service Navigator for the City Steps program of AIRS (AIDS Interfaith Residential Services, www.airshome.org), how she chose to work with youth who are experiencing homelessness, and the insights she’s gained along the way. Prior to earning her Master’s degree in Social Work at the University of Maryland, Ms. Wilson worked for 10 years in various positions such as a community organizer for a union, a case manager at a homeless day shelter in New York City, and working with foster care children. WLOY is looking for DJ’s to host their own shows in the fall! If you’re interested in becoming a part of the WLOY team, come to our open houses on September 7th – 9th at 7 – 9pm in Bellarmine Hall (by the new Iggy’s Market). Celebrate the 4th of July with WLOY!

Join Nick Centanni on WLOY 12-2PM and 6-8PM for 2 separate beachfront broadcasts of the Moldy Oldie Show this July 4!
Nick will have a mix of upbeat summer songs, Independence Day facts, jokes, and of course periodic visits from campus royalty via the ‘gold campus royalty phone.’ Nick will be up to his usual tricks so you won’t know what to expect next.
There will also be a special Independence Day wishes from some familiar voices in the 8PM hour. This is high octane radio so make it a date and don’t be late! The fun begins July 4 at Noon all right here on WLOY 1620!

Hans at play. Since he is no longer a DJ, or even a student, we really have no explanation for this photo. It was recently discovered and we just felt it needed to be shared. We tell the monkeys not to feed Hans, but… they always do and it makes him so happy. It’s a wonder they let him leave Ghana.

Lance Says Goodbye

Lance sheds a single tear in memory of the good times in Austin and all the graduating seniors of 2010. With thanks and great hopes for your futures, WLOY says goodbye to Eric “Hans” Sappington, Rich “The DJ” Rodrigues, Jeff “The X is Silent” Malone, Mike “The Red” Mennis, Jenna Mercadante, Brittany Sigler and Heather Doyle. We also wonder why only the guys got dorky nicknames.
You’re all leaving on a high note as Club of the Year! Not a bad way to go out. Congratulations and all the best for the future!! You will be missed. Well, maybe not Eric, but the rest of you certainly will be. Lance reminds Hans that what happens in Austin stays in Austin, unless you’re dumb enough to leave photos behind… which will be very helpful when soliciting alumni donations 😉
