ATOW: “SABLE fABLE” by Bon Iver

Review: Bon Iver’s fifth studio album, “SABLE, fABLE” is nothing new from their previous work and have yet again met the quality standards that come with their past albums. Their new album SABLE, fABLE serves as an epilogue or ending to the band’s career and closing a chapter that has been around for more than a decade. I find that the album provides a great closing for the bands career and leaves fans with an accepted and good ending.
Previous to the new album, my favorite work done by Bon Iver is their 2007 album For Emma, Forever Ago. I really enjoy the acoustic sound of the album, followed by unique sounds within the folk genre. I believe that SABLE, fABLE provides a newer perspective on where the band has found themselves in the modern day. Compared to their original debut album back in 2007, the band has transformed from a sound that was gloomier to a sound that is more upbeat and happier.
Two songs I really enjoyed off the new album are “AWARDS SEASON” and “Day One”. “AWARDS SEASON” reflects the best lead singer, Justin Vernon’s recent years. The song feels like a reckoning with the past and accepting the present. It also serves as the closing track on the album and really wraps up what has been such a great career for the band. By the time you arrive at “Day One” (featuring Dijon and Flock of Dimes), the album has fully transitioned to the “fABLE” side. I enjoy how this song is a newer sound from the band, but it retains the signature complexity of Bon Iver’s production. The song sounds like a rebirth, contrasting from the earlier sounds of For Emma, Forever Ago.
