RIYL: Pinegrove, Big Thief, and Soccer Mommy

Review: Wednesday, originating from North Carolina and composed of members MJ Lenderman, Karly Hartzman, Alan Miller, Xandy Chelmis, and Ethan Baechtold, released their 6th studio album, Bleeds on September 19th, 2025. Member MJ Lenderman, who has an astounding solo career aside from the band with multiple solo projects has been confirmed to be departing from the group. The sudden departure was announced previously on their socials before the album was released in September and is more than likely related to the recent break up between him and lead singer Karly Hartzman.

Despite the two biggest members’ relationship problems, their album Bleeds proves to be their best work yet. We get songs like “Townies” to begin the album’s track list which provides a personal perspective speaking on the small-town antics members grew up with in rural North Carolina, As well as Hartzman’s young relationship problems as a teenager. Two tracks later we are met with the song “Elderberry Wine” which is written as a direct message to member MJ Lenderman. The song cuts deep with lyrics relating to the two members’ recent break-up and the continuous problems between the two. I feel like this album is perfect for fall and carries a fun vibe with it as well. Most of the songs on the album are more of a mellow listen, however there are multiple tracks that are louder and more up-beat as well. Songs like “Wasp” and “Phish Pepsi” are more heavier energetic songs. Overall, this album is amazing and a great listen if you love soft-alternative rock music or maybe to get over a small-town broken relationship.
