Nicole Destefanis, a graduate of Loyola University in 2022, reflects on her time at Loyola and the impact of hosting a radio show.
Q: Can you tell us about your show at WLOY? (name and theme, genre of music)
A: The show is called “welcome 2 ur 20s,” and we’re diving into the postgrad years, serving as an alumni spotlight on a topic heavily avoided while in school–each week will have a different genre/vibe, ranging from 90s alt rock, to early 00s pop to current indie, etc. (a taste of almost everything…except country).
Q: What made you want to host a show?
A: I hosted a show all four years of my undergrad and WLOY has always held a place in my heart, so I wanted to return for an alumni show. I joined WLOY back in 2018 because my mom had been involved with her college radio station when she was a student and I wanted to follow in her footsteps. I ended up falling in love with it a bit too much, because now I’m starting off my career in the music industry.
Q: What is your favorite part about hosting a show at WLOY?
A: Curating playlists! I’ve now earned control over aux among my friends
Q: What is your favorite feel-good song/artist?
A: Femininomenon by Chappell Roan has been on REPEAT recently but Can’t Get You out of My Head by Kylie Minogue has been a constant go to. Fleetwood Mac, however, is my all around go-to feel good (sorry John)
Q: Do you listen to your show every week? If so, any listening traditions? (with who, where do you listen?)
A: I try not to listen to my show…as much love as I pour into recording each show, I cannot sit and listen to my voice. I usually intentionally make plans during air time, but I love when my phone buzzes with friends and family commenting on the show as it’s playing.
