Sam Fender is an English singer, songwriter, and musician who has put out three studio albums: Hypersonic MissilesSeventeen Going Under, and now People Watching. Fender is known for his Geordie accent and his songwriting style. People Watching reflects on the struggles of working-class life in North Shields and his newfound popularity.
Something that sets him and this album apart is his relatability with his audience. He had a hard upbringing which is demonstrated in a lot of these songs. My favorite song from the album is “Something Heavy,” which speaks to the burdens people carry while somehow still being upbeat. “Arm’s Length,” is another favorite of mine that is about emotional distance. These songs have strong folk and alternative rock influences, some even include psychedelia. He’s heavily inspired by Bruce Springsteen’s storytelling vibe. If you’re looking for something different to listen to then check out this album!
