Rush turns back time to rearrange Moving Pictures
Longevity into four decades as a successful rock band is not an easy endeavor. Surviving as a rock musician in the music industry is actually recognized as an occupational hazard. It is therefore an amazing accomplishment for a Canadian power trio to compose and produce new material that continues to drive demand for the group to appear live in concert on tour.
Rush’s Time Machine Tour calculatingly celebrates the 30th anniversary of the release of Moving Pictures, a vital album that sky-rocketed the band’s touring fortunes. Returning to perform in Baltimore after an extended hiatus on Friday, April 22, 2011, Rush was at the top of their game fueling fan fealty at the 1st Mariner Arena.

Explosions In The Sky – Take Care, Take Care, Take Care

As difficult as it is to believe, there was a time in history when Explosions in the Sky’s brand of post-rock was novel, exciting. Then again, other fresh ideas at the time of The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place’s release included the launch of iTunes and the U.S. planning an invasion of Iraq… dating the post-rockers, but not as much as the troupe of copy-cats have dated them. Point is, it’s been a while since EITS were in the heyday of sprawling, simplistic, post-rock masterpieces. Oh, how far they’ve fallen. It’s said that necessity is the mother of invention— this makes sense in regards to Take Care, Take Care, Take Care because it’s an album devoid (more…)

Asobi Seksu – Fluorescence

As listeners, we desire familiarity– something to grasp on to, to harken back to. Looking back on the past can help us understand the present, but this desire gets us in trouble sometimes. We can get too caught up in striving to label that modern day My Bloody Valentine or Slowdive that we forget to appreciate the distinctness of the tongue-twister-tagged Asobi Seksu. (more…)

The Flaming Lips and Neon Indian – The Flaming Lips and Neon Indian

Everything is in its right place, perfectly as you would expect a Flaming Lips and Neon Indian collaboration to play out. With little fanfare, Wayne Coyne personally hand-delivers the EP to record stores in his local Oklahoma City area (only two stores are reported to be carrying the EP at this point), the artwork is indistinct, and a main facet of the all-vinyl release is that not two single vinyls are adorned with the same color or pattern– unique, and exactly what we could expect from such a work.
