The Fall Classic

October 25th, 2013 by WLOY Staff

UnknownThe World Series officially kicked off this week, and started with a very interesting opening two games. This year’s World Series sees the feel-good story Boston Red Sox facing the ridiculously experienced St. Louis Cardinals. It’s the series of the Beards vs the Birds.

Strangely enough, this is the first time in a while that the World Series is between the two teams with the best records in their respective conferences. Both teams finished the regular season with a record of 97-65, and the argument can be made that they have been the two best teams in baseball all year.

The matchup is incredibly even, with both teams having dominant hitting all year, a stellar starting rotation, fundamental defense, and a lights-out bullpen. This series seems like it will be determined by who happens to make the mistake late in the game to decide it.

The first two games took place at Fenway Park in Boston. Game 1 saw the Red Sox capitalize on the early defensive errors by the Cardinals as they went on to win 8-1 thanks to a gem of a game from their ace, John Lester. Game 2 swayed in the Cardinals favor as rookie pitcher Michael Wacha continued his incredible season, striking out 6 and giving up just 2 runs as the Cardinals went on to win late 4-2, tying the series at 1 a piece.

As the even series heads back to St. Louis for three games, the future seems to already be promising a great World Series this year. Watching these two teams play, one thing is for sure. Whoever wins, they deserve it.
