Barns Courtney – 404

Release: September 6, 2019

Rate: 10/10

RIYL: Bryce Fox, grandson, Tribe Society, Oh The Larceny

From listening to so many artists some of the music and sounds seem to blend together. What makes this album so special is that it made me look up while listening. I was immediately grabbed by the sound and lyrics of this album. Its indie rock sound shines through in all the songs but there are so many other things mixed in like gospel and punk rock. It is difficult nowadays to find an artist that seems to pull this off, but Barns Courtney has found a way to do it.

Barns Courtney has been no stranger to adversity. He started off in a band that failed to take off and was left without direction and with very little money. Bouncing from couch to couch, he finally took off when his song “Fire” was used in the movie Burnt. 404 is Barn Courtney’s second album and I would highly recommend “You and I” for it has a fun upbeat sound and impactful lyrics. Overall this album has been one of my favorites and I truly believe it deserves its 10/10 rating. I would definitely categorize it as a “MUST LISTEN.”

Review: Shannon Lay – August

Released: August 23, 2019

Rate: 8.2/10

RIYL: Molly Burch, Bedouine, Anna St. Louis, Boy Scouts

This album truly caught my attention because of its dreamy and soothing sound as well as its powerful lyrics. Lay wrote this album to commemorate the month in 2017 when she quit her job to follow her dreams of making music. The album is a way for her listeners to feel and hear her liberation and finding herself as a musician.

This album was written in a span of 3 months during her solo tour. This was a way for her to create her own sound away from the band she used to play with called Feels. She was able to capture an easy flowing mood within her music. She compares her sound to the flow of a river. Her heavy use of acoustic guitar makes it the perfect music to listen to when you’re chilling out or crunching for a big test. Full of mellow waves of guitar and soothing melodies and deep impacting lyrics makes this album a “Must Listen.

Review: Bodywash – Comforter

Bodywash – Comforter

Release Date: August 30, 2019

Rate: 7/10

RIYL: Memoryhouse, Craft Spells, Japanese Breakfast, SASAMI

Bodywash is a band that came to be in 2014 when Chris Steward (vocals, guitar, bass, synths, and drums) and Rosie Long Decter (vocals, and synths) started to play music together at McGill University.

The band captures a very dreampop sound, with its soft vocals and heavy use of synth to make you feel like you are being lifted up to the clouds. They recorded this album in a span of two years making the sound absolutely perfect. The dedication and hard work put into this album is seen in songs like Twins and Reverie. You can tell that this album come from self-exploration and learning to let things be the way they are. I would recommend listening to this album when looking for something to relax to, or even if you’re going through your own self exploration journey.

This new video, for ‘Ink’ off Coldplay’s most recent album Ghost Stories, takes it’s viewers on an interactive journey following a man’s dream for love and happiness. About every ten seconds or so the viewer, player is given a choice or a path that will lead our main character toward a new horizon and will significantly change his fate and his chances at love. This incredible video, designed by Blind, offers about 300 different music videos in one with it’s many options for it’s character to fulfill. This type of video raises the bar in the world of music videos and gives the listeners so much more involvement in the music they love so much. It’s very engaging and adds an awesome new level to the experience of listening to good music. Innovations like these allow artists to bring their followers just a little bit deeper into their crazy worlds, and I am a fan.
