Grade: A-

The husband and wife duo, “Thus Owls” recently released their album Turning Rocks. Though Thus Owls consist of other people in the band, it is mostly centered around Erika and Simon Angell. Turning Rocks relies on heavy drum beats, synths and distortion in an effort to make you feel like you are traveling to another world. Erika’s powerful voice, similar to the likes of Florence Welch from Florence and the Machine helps carry each song to another level. The album in its entirety is dynamic and grand, the use of distortion adds an element of surprise that helps build the songs and bring them to live. Though at points, some songs on the album do seem to be very long and almost monotonous, but overall the album was great to listen to, especially when needing to think or to clean your musical palette.
