September 15th, 2016 by WLOY Staff

Caleb Stine Honfest 2014

It’s already mid-September! Feeling like you need a little relaxation in your busy schedules? WLOY is continuing the weekly coffeehouse experience with the one and only Caleb Stine! This Thursday, September 15th, Caleb will be performing in our new location, Starbucks, right here on campus from 9-11pm. Starbucks will remain open for Stine’s performance, so it’s a great way to relax, drink some coffee, and enjoy some great music! Caleb Stine has released over 10 albums, has spent some time acting off-Broadway, and has traveled all over the country sharing his talent. We have been lucky enough to host him here on our stage in the past, and even luckier to have been able to invite him back for another round! We certainly hope to see you there!

Feel free to check out more of Stine’s work on his website

Wacky Wednesday: DogFest!

September 14th, 2016 by WLOY Staff

logo-dogfest2016-final-300x257What: Dogs!

Where: Baltimore Humane Society

When: Saturday, September 17th

Let’s be real: everyone loves dogs. If you don’t you’re either lying or allergic to them. Well, if you are allergic, then this event might not be for you since The Baltimore Humane Society will be overflowing with dogs on Saturday the 17th from 10am-4om. For everyone else though, tickets will be $15 at the door, which includes a free ticket to Magooby’s Joke House. This event has something for everyone (and every animal) with games, contests, crafts, and food. Enter your dog into a best costume contest, take him bowling, train him, and watch some cool demos together. OR, if you’re like me, check out some great vendors, raise some money for the Humane Society, pet every single dog, and try your hardest not to adopt all the animals. No matter what you plan is, you should definitely show up and support your local puppies.

Today we celebrate a milestone! WLOY’s award-winning show Crucial Cuts with Earl Crown has reached show 100! Student DJs listen and learn from his great blend of Rap, Reggae, Punk, Garage, New Wave, Soul, R&B and more. Every one of these tracks is a must know and as he likes to say “If you don’t know who this artist is… ask an adult.” Congratulations Earl Crown on making it to SHOW 100!

First Coffeehouse of the year: SKRIBE

September 6th, 2016 by The Professor

SkribeWelcome back (or just Welcome for you First Year folks)!  WLOY is kicking off the 2016 Coffeehouse series with a new location and a new artist to the series.  Annapolis-based Skribe will be performing at our NEW LOCATION adjacent to the Starbucks on campus this Thursday 8-10pm.  Starbucks will stay open with extended hours to support the Coffeehouse shows all year, so you can still enjoy a Pumpkin Spice Latte and a cake pop while you enjoy the sweet sounds of Skribe.  We loved the show Skribe put on for us over the summer at our Honfest stage and so we invited him back, along with Gingerwolf, to perform for our kick off Coffeehouse event.  Check out more Skribe tunes on their website, including free downloads.

Concert Review: Modern Baseball @ Baltimore Soundstage (Baltimore, MD) & The Fillmore (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)

July 4th, 2016 by WLOY Staff

Review by: Tara Howell

Right after MoBo surprise released The Perfect Cast EP, I had the chance to see them for the first time at my favorite Baltimore venue, Ottobar, in the fall of 2015. More than any other concert I’ve been to, it felt like a group therapy session. In a room full of strangers, I’ve never felt more connected. It was at this concert that I really, really realized not only how powerful music is, but how special this band really is. Read the rest of this entry »

WLOY Book Thing Donation Tops $10,000!

June 24th, 2016 by The Professor

Book Thing check handover When we got news of a massive fire at The Book Thing, we knew we had to act to help. This great institution has been getting free books into the hands of the community for more than a decade and has become a critical part of Baltimore. We were able to immediately give them $2,000 from our community fund to help out but it didn’t seem sufficient. Working with the folks at Peabody Heights Brewery, next door to The Book Thing, and the great people at Friends Records, we held a 2-stage fundraising event on May 28th with 19 artists performing throughout the day. Ticket sales, direct donations, donations from the food vendors and the brewery put us at a total of $8,004.00 raised by the event! We are incredibly lucky to be a part of a community that teams up to support itself and could never have done this without their help. Pictured above John Devecka (WLOY), Russell Wattenberg (The Book Thing), Dana Murphy (Friends Records) and Eddie O’Keefe (Peabody Heights Brewery) and absent but VERY responsible for this success is Jimmy MacMillan of Friends Records. A huge thank you to all the amazing bands that jumped on board immediately when asked: DJ Earl Crown, The Milestones, Stacked Like Pancakes, PLRLS, Greasy Hands, Saleem & The Music Lovers, Femi the Drifish & The Out of Water Experience, Wendel Patrick, Eze Jackson, The Boom Bap Society, The Diamond Sea, Brendan Sullivan, Soothsayer, Shinji, DJ Benny Stixx, Maxine, Raindeer, Goblin Mold and Sun Club. The food vendors: Shorty’s Bootleg BBQ, The Green Bowl and Farm to Charm. Donations of raffle items: Maryland Wineries Association, Cafe Hon, Burdock & Bramble, Peabody Heights Brewery, Steve Parke. Thank you ALL for this amazing event and result!
