Coan and Gialamas Take Rio by Storm

September 23rd, 2016 by WLOY Staff

Sports Saturday

On September 7th McKenzie Coan and Alyssa Gialamas, two juniors on the women’s swimming and diving team, embarked on a journey of a lifetime to Rio for the 2016 Paralympic games. This will be the girl’s second appearance in the Paralympics as they also competed in the 2012 games in London.

Coan was dominant in her events as she swept the individual freestyle golds. She collected her first career gold medal in the S7 50 free. She also went on to capture the gold in the S7 400 and the S7 100 freestyle as well. Coan did not stop there. She also was apart of the 400 freestyle relay team, which won silver in the event. Coan finished the Paralympic games with 4 medals. (3 gold, 1 silver)

Gialamas had an outstanding Paralympic games as well. She placed sixth in her strongest event, the S5 50m backstroke turning in a time of 47.96. She also finished tenth in the S5 100 free. Gialamas rounded out her performance in the games by posting a 3:15.04 in the S5 200 free. This was good enough for seventh place in the event.

To compete in the Paralympic games is an incredible accomplishment to begin with, but to have the success that these girls had is something to be proud of. Congratulations girls on an experience of a lifetime!

What: The sights of Patterson Park

Where: 27 S Patterson Park Ave, Baltimore

When: Dawn until dusk

Patterson Park is home to some great sights in Baltimore. With attractions like the Patterson Pagoda, this is a beautiful park and a must-see while in the city! Within the park there is architecture free to explore. For example, the Patterson Pagoda, built in 1890, is open to the public from noon to 6pm on Sundays. So go walk the beautiful spiral stars and appreciate what is considered to be a symbol of Baltimore. Not to mention, they also host family events there from time to time.

If it’s a little hotter out, then you can also check out Boat Lake. Go look a the wildlife living around the lake or stroll down the boards on the water. Grossed out by the waterfowl? Then check out the fountain instead! Designed by the great George Frederick, this historical fountain is a neat place to hang out with your friends and take in the scenery. Or just go for a swim in the public pool!

Normally, parks in Winter are horrible. But not here! With admission to the ice skating rink priced at only $4.00, it’s a steal to come skate on a nice December day. You can find the hours for the rink here. No matter what the season, day or time, there’s plenty to see at the great Patterson Park, so make sure to add it to your Baltimore trip itinerary!

Metalachi Studio Seizure 9/9/16

September 19th, 2016 by The Professor

metalachi-outside-wloy How do you explain the brilliant madness that is Metalachi? And, more to the point, who in their right mind would give them control of a radio station?! We did. For 90 minutes the station was seized by a mad mix of heavy metal, mariachi music and George Michael… Yes, seriously. The band stopped by on the second night of their East Coast tour to hang out with our GM Tara and give her a dose of their show. Not only did they select all the music for the show, they even allowed us to play the advance version of their cover of Motorhead’s “Ace of Spades” which will be appearing on their upcoming second album, shockingly titled “Dos”. We will have some video and more photos to follow, but for now, we’re just busy trying to find the N’Sync bobble heads.

Show list:
Baby Got Back- Sir Mix Lot
She Blinded me with Science – Thomas “I live in Baltimore now” Dolby
Careless Whisper – George Michael
Ember City- Mastadon
Remember the Time- Michael Jackson
Have You Ever Loved a Woman- Bryan Adams
Tits- John Paragon (actually we couldn’t play this one for obvious reasons, but they wanted to)
Final Countdown- Europe
Holy Diver- Dio

Football is Back in Baltimore!

September 16th, 2016 by WLOY Staff

Sports Saturday

With the 2015 injury riddled season in the rear view mirror, the Baltimore Ravens are finally back to full strength and looking forward to the season. The Ravens have a number of players returning who missed a significant portion of last season including quarterback Joe Flacco, wide receiver Steve Smith Sr, and running back Justin Forsett. To go along with free agent acquisitions Mike Wallace and Eric Weddle, the Ravens have reloaded for the 2016 campaign as they look to rebound after a disappointing season last year. Food Fridays: Papermoon Diner

September 16th, 2016 by WLOY Staff

What: Papermoon Diner

Where: 227 W 29th St

When: Hours

Funky. Eccentric. Delicious. That’s the best way to do justice to the Papermoon Diner. Full of color and strange decorations, like doll heads, this place is Baltimore’s take on diners.

Cool decorations aren’t the only appeal though. This diner has amazing food ranging from brunch to nachos to pasta to milkshakes (pictured above). With food for vegans and meat-lovers alike, this is a diner for everyone. The only negative about Papermoon is that it takes forever to decide what you want! I would recommend something to you, but even I can’t make up my mind as to what’s the best. Check out their menu here and stop in to pig out.
