The Professor Wins an Award!

May 16th, 2010 by Tim Teeling

John Devecka Loyola AMDG Award Winner 2010

WLOY is proud to announce that our Operations Manager, John Devecka, has won the 2010 Loyola University AMDG Community Award. He is the man who started our push for Haiti relief fundraising. Without him, there wouldn’t have been a 100% match from the Aber D. Unger Foundation. John has made an impact on the Loyola Campus, the Greater Baltimore Community, and from his efforts this past semester, to countless people in Haiti.

The entire WLOY staff would like to thank John for all his hard work over the years at WLOY. We are proud of you and proud to say we work for WLOY. Read the full press release after the break!

Lance Says Goodbye

May 14th, 2010 by The Professor

Lance sheds a single tear in memory of the good times in Austin and all the graduating seniors of 2010. With thanks and great hopes for your futures, WLOY says goodbye to Eric “Hans” Sappington, Rich “The DJ” Rodrigues, Jeff “The X is Silent” Malone, Mike “The Red” Mennis, Jenna Mercadante, Brittany Sigler and Heather Doyle. We also wonder why only the guys got dorky nicknames.

You’re all leaving on a high note as Club of the Year! Not a bad way to go out. Congratulations and all the best for the future!! You will be missed. Well, maybe not Eric, but the rest of you certainly will be. Lance reminds Hans that what happens in Austin stays in Austin, unless you’re dumb enough to leave photos behind… which will be very helpful when soliciting alumni donations ūüėČ

Built to Spill – There’s Nothing Wrong with Love

May 13th, 2010 by Eric Loose

Built to Spill, the indie-rock band hailing from Boise, Idaho, has one of the¬†deepest and most accomplished discographies you can Ô¨Ānd in the genre. Yes, I said it.

The name Doug Martsch may not conjure the¬†same thoughts that a mention of Elliott Smith¬†does, and someone bringing up a song from¬†Keep it Like a Secret may be less common than¬†someone mentioning a song from In the¬†Aeroplane Over the Sea. That being said, this¬†band is deÔ¨Ānitely a classic in their genre. The successive albums Keep it Like a Secret, which¬†contains a laid-back summer twang, and Perfect¬†From Now On, Martsch ventures a few tiny steps¬†into progressive territory, are absolute¬†masterpieces. But I digress… I’m here to explain¬†the beauty of the prelude to these, There’s Nothing Wrong With Love. Read the rest of this entry »

Castevet – Summer Fences

May 13th, 2010 by Eric Loose

Open your ears and let that beautiful, simplistic melody Ô¨āood your brain with¬†ideas of happiness and contentment. As the song progresses, you can feel the emotion begin¬†to well up as the instrumentation becomes more and more complex. You can’t¬†remember the last time you felt this relaxed as you tilt your head back and feel your¬†eyelids shut – but only halfway. And just as the vocals come in, so smoothly and Ô¨āuidly,¬†from the most melliÔ¨āuous vo- WAIT! Read the rest of this entry »

Chuck Ragan – Gold Country

May 11th, 2010 by Eric Loose

Summary: Chuck Ragan made me think twice about my hatred towards country music…incredibly consistent and well-structured, Gold Country is not one to miss this year.

Punk and country music don’t have a whole lot in common, right? Chuck Ragan¬†sets to prove that wrong with Gold Country and does a pretty damn good job of it. Former frontman of punk band Hot Water Music, Ragan didn’t¬†have a whole lot to prove. He was already pretty acclaimed in the punk scene. So, when¬†he decided to swap Hot Water Music for a solo¬†country-Western album, I was a little surprised.¬†His Ô¨Ārst solo album, Feast or Famine, was a¬†bare-bones album that managed to showcase¬†Ragan”s versatility. His follow-up incorporates¬†that same simplicity, but Ragan manages to add¬†a little extra here and there. Read the rest of this entry »

Top 40 5.10.10

May 10th, 2010 by Rich Rodrigues

Well, well, well. ¬†Freelance Whales take over the #1 spot this week knocking of MGMT’s 2 week run @ #1. ¬†We see some debuts from Keane as well as the Deftones. ¬†This week’s top 40 chart is inspired by BONO. ¬†He turns 50 today (5/10) and those glasses he keeps wearing makes him look no older than 45 I say. ¬†Rock on BONO!
