Mr. Gnome – Heave Yer Skeleton

February 22nd, 2010 by WLOY Staff

When I started listening to Mr. Gnome, I was vaguely reminded of the Pixies. Mr. Gnome has the sound of an indie band from the late 80’s to early 90’s that resonates through the wailing vocals and distorted guitar. The band is composed of Nicole Barille (guitar and vocals) and Sam Meister (drums). They create a ghostly sound in Heave Yer Skeleton that derives from the echoes of Barille’s lonely voice. The songs are not necessarily catchy but become memorable because they haunt the listener. The first track, “Spain,” slowly drifts with a dreamlike quality, while “Searider Falcon” hits hard with distorted guitar riffs that demonstrates their ability to really rock.
I think every track on this album is worth listening to. I find myself coming back to the album because of Barille’s unique voice. It fits perfectly with heavy guitar riffs as well as soft melodic songs. My favorite track, “Plastic Shadow,” defines the sound of the CD with Barille’s dynamic voice that is supported by strong guitar riffs. I think it is simply impressive that only two people can create such a developed sound with a guitar and drums. Overall, this album is a comforting blend of soft and hard rock that creates a three-dimensional sound, compared to some bands that are strictly one-sided. I would recommend this band to a fan of indie music or alternative music like the Pixies from the late 80’s to early 90’s. Mr. Gnome has a solid sound that is sure to steadily improve.
