Currency Exchange: German Electronica 1/29/11

Saturday, January 28th, 2012 by The Professor

Tune in to The Currency Exchange every Sunday at 11am on WLOY. Today’s theme: German Electronica! It took me a long time to appreciate electronic music in general, and ambient music in particular. As a drummer, the first thing I look for is rhythm and beat, both of which are missing from most of this music. My interest in the Krautrock exploration of the 70′s and 80′s eventually led me to the work of drummer Harald Grosskopf on albums by Klaus Schulze and YOU (both of which are played on this show, but only the latter with Grosskopf’s drums). I found myself getting lost in the repeating patterns, waves, and oscillations of synthesizers and string instruments, and peeling back interwoven layers of science fiction noise and rich harmonies. If you have a good pair of headphones, they are highly recommended for this show. (more…)

Currency Exchange: Dub Reggae for the New Year!

Saturday, December 31st, 2011 by The Professor

Join DJ Seth Michaels on Sunday 1/1/12 to celebrate the new year in chill style – Dub Reggae on The Currency Exchange.

My first exposure to reggae music came through the work of Lee “Scratch” Perry, and before that, the Clash. These artists took recorded music to new levels through studio manipulation and creation of “Dub” versions of familiar songs. Although I love all forms of reggae, I think Dub holds the most appeal to me. The general lack of vocals leave the music more open to interpretation and can fit any mood. The throbbing bass and hypnotic drums scaffold an ever-changing soundscape, while wide open spaces highlight the importance of playing not just the notes, but the moments between them. While some complain that dub (and reggae in general) can be repetitive and boring, I find that the layering of various instruments, strange echo effects, and the drop-in/drop-out technique of mixing rewards repeated listening.

DUB REGGAE SHOW PLAYLIST (title/artist):
1 – 555 Dub Street/Augustus Pablo
2 – Leggo Beast (version)/Gregory Issacs (remixed by Bill Laswell)
3 – Dub it Clean/Burning Spear
4 – Dub Along/Lee Perry and the Upsetters
5 – One More Dub/The Clash
6 – The Corpse Rises/Scientist
7 – Dub Inna Babylon/Dr. Israel
8 – Aquarius Dub/Herman Chin-Loy
