WLOY Coffee House Presents: Singer Song-writer Workshop with Claire Anthony

Wednesday, November 20th, 2013 by WLOY Staff

Claire+Anthony+IMG_6259Last week we were graced with the enchanting sounds of Caleb Stine, but WLOY isn’t going to stop there! This Thursday, WLOY Coffee House Series hosts Claire Anthony, a young Baltimore singer song-writer. Claire’s soothing sound perfectly captures the ambiance of a cozy coffee house amidst a chilly November evening. However, although Claire will be performing her songs she also encourages all to share their own material. This is both a performance for the music lover, and workshop for those novice artists. It is a great opportunity to get feedback and improve your own material. So bring your guitar, or your rhymes, or maybe only your ears. Either way, the event begins Thursday evening, 9pm, in the third floor reading room. In the mean time, check out some of Claire’s music.

Tourism Tuesday: Passages through the Fire: Jews and the Civil War

Tuesday, November 19th, 2013 by WLOY Staff

Passages-500x450What: Passages through Fire: Jews and the Civil War

When: Now until February 18th, 2014

Where: The Jewish Museum of Maryland

Come explore a Civil War you have never experienced before! It tells the story of events of national importance, through the lens of one small group in the American populous. It looks at the ways in which the Civil War was a crucible for American Jewish identity, and how it laid the groundwork for their integration and Americanization on a large scale. It focuses not only on the battlefield, but on the difficult choices made by non-combatants throughout the struggle. The exhibition also looks at the role the conflict played in establishing a framework for the full participation of Jews in American life – militarily, politically, economically and socially – and how it set the stage for massive Jewish immigration decades later.

Friday, November 15th, 2013 by WLOY Staff

91520177958567Loyola soccer is officially through one full season as part of the Patriot League, and changes are already in order. Both the men’s soccer coach, Mark Mettrick, and women’s soccer coach, Katherine Remy Vettori, will not have their contracts renewed and will not be back at Loyola next year.

The men finished the 2013 season with a conference record of 2-6-1 and an overall record of 7-8-2. The women were about the same in terms of conference play, going 1-6-2 in conference play, but struggled outside the conference as well, going 2-11-4 overall. (more…)

RadioEdu Week 08

Concepts: Introduction to Loop Editing (Cutting and Layering), EQ/Hi/Lo-Pass Filters, and Composition

This week we took our audio editing in entirely different direction – cutting and layering loops to create soundbeds! The students had been asking about working with more music files as source material for their editing, and John was able to provide us with ample audio loops for the class. We began the introduction by playing through the audio libraries and the students picked a drum break that they really liked. The next step was to choose some melody, and they picked a great ethereal sample of a Rhodes keyboard. This served as our basic introduction, but later in the afternoon we expanded on the concepts, including advanced editing as the students delved into cutting and manipulating segments of the loops.

Having effortlessly mastered the concept of looping within 15 minutes, the students created an audio track with a basic drum break on loop. I used this as an opportunity to demonstrate how EQ and Hi/Lo-Pass filters work. The class was able to really hear the impact that these effects have on a track with repeated source material such as a drum loop.

The project for the week was for the students to begin thinking about creating their own introductions and soundbeds, and the proof of concept was for each student in the afternoon session to create their own 30 second composition through layering and manipulating the loops. I allowed each student to pick their source material and gave them completely free reign to cut and arrange the loops as they saw fit. The results were incredible and vastly different! What is truly impressive about these selections is that the students didn’t merely layer the pre-existing audio loops. They selected their source material and then proceeded to load the source files into an audio editor and select segments that they particularly liked and cut the audio and paste it onto a new track, creating their own unique rhythms and sounds from the source file, creating a new groove and feel from the pre-existing audio source! This required a high degree of precision, as the process of cutting audio in an editor is inherently difficult, as is segmenting it to create a solid groove over a drum beat.
