Baltimore Atheists Get Their Word Out

The Baltimore Coalition of Reason introduces itself through a billboard campaign. Click here for PDF Copy

Just in time for the holidays, a group of nonreligious persuasion is getting its message out amidst this season of religiously inspired celebrations.  The Baltimore Coalition of Reason, a new organization made up of atheists, agnostics, and others, has recently introduced itself to the Baltimore area through a billboard campaign.  With their efforts, the Coalition is inevitably entering itself into the culture wars between religious and secular thought that has become particularly charged in this country in this decade.  Atheism is in vogue as of late, as noted by the success of the best-selling books and many public appearances by famous atheists Christopher Hitchens and Richard Dawkins.  Religious responses to atheism’s recent foothold in the public have also been strong, as evidenced by the push to include “intelligent design” in school curricula and efforts to include religious messages on government property.  But the Coalition is taking a much softer approach than that of Hitchens and Dawkins.  The specific message that it is sending out should prove to much less inflammatory in the eyes of religious thinkers. Congressman Ron Paul presents “The Case Against the Fed.” Click here for PDF Copy

On January 27, for the second Wednesday evening in a row, McGuire Hall played host to a famous guest speaker.  This time, the conversation turned to politics, with Congressman Ron Paul presenting “The Case Against the Fed.”  Paul is a Republican who has served in Texas’s 14th district for 20 years.  He has been in the national spotlight lately due to his campaign as a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination in the 2008 election.  More infamously, he was also recently ambushed by comedian Sacha Baron Cohen in an interview featured in last summer’s Brüno.  Dr. Thomas DiLorenzo, professor of economics, arranged Paul’s appearance.  The event was part of the Moral Foundations of Capitalism lecture series that is being run by Dr. DiLorenzo. Many professional sports stars feel compelled to give back to the community, often by way of establishing foundations with causes that they feel strongly about.  With the big paychecks that athletes receive, they certainly have the money to invest in such ventures, and the community tends to be thankful that such athletes use their money for generous means.  The world of Baltimore sports is no exception to this trend of athletes giving back, as the example of Nick Markakis illustrates. WLOY’s take on Snowmageddon 2010. Click here for PDF Copy

We here at WLOY tried to resist a snow-related feature story.  It was the story that every other news outlet was covering.  It was the story that did not need to be covered anyway.  Just look out your window.  The story itself was doing the covering.  But Mother Nature seemed to know that there were a few reporters who were holding out on their snow coverage, so she added a few more inches to the record winters.  So WLOY has decided to bring in its perspective.  As we are now getting in the groove following spring break, we ask – nay! – we demand, surely, this must be the end of Snowmageddon.
