Honfest Spotlight: Maria Dontas

Loyola alum, Maria Dontas, is a singularly talented individual. She is a lovely, smart woman who has also been gifted with the voice of a Greek goddess. Maria Dontas is a singer-songwriter. She writes and performs her very own songs and has been kind enough to grace Loyola with her talents. She will be performing again for WLOY this summer on June. 14th. Honfest Spotlight: Nalani and Sarina

Nalani and Sarina Bolton are a singer-songwriter duo from Delaware. They are immensely talented and combine fantastic vocals with thoughtful lyrics. Their guitar, piano and tambourine skills bring it home to create a truly harmonious tone. Loyola was lucky enough to be graced with their presence this year. Baltimore is going to be lucky enough to welcome Nalani and Sarina again this summer at Honfest. The two will be performing at WLOY’s stage on June 14th. Caleb Stine Interview

Attending a Great American Cookout event will get you the know-how, but you’re going to need top of the line grill gear to accompany your skills. This year, the Great American Cookout will be hosting the BBQ Getaway Giveaway sweepstakes. The giveaways are centered on America’s favorite grilling holidays: Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day. The end-of-year winner will be the recipient of a BBQ Celebrity Bash in their backyard, complete with food, entertainment and an appearance by a celebrity barbecue personality. Holiday giveaways throughout the year will include a Big Green Egg cooker, plus products and grilling accessories from tour partners. It’s almost too good to believe!

Nalani & Sarina Interview

Following their performance at our WLOY Coffeehouse, I had the chance to sit down with Nalani & Sarina, the dynamic, twinning duo who can hold their own in the music game. The extremely talented pair graced our ears with their singing abilities, along with each playing the guitar, piano and ukelele. Honfest: Saleem and the Music Lovers

Saleem and the Music Lovers are a hip hop group from right here in Baltimore. They have a similar sound to The Roots and Common. If you’re into the funky, hip hop style of these artists, then you’re sure to enjoy Saleem and the Music Lovers. They’ve been in formation since 2005 and have been combining jazz, funk and rhythm and blues. They’ll be performing at WLOY’s stage during Honfest this summer on June.14th. Reminder!! Star Search this Thursday 4/24

Now, WLOY usually isn’t in the business of beating dead horses (we consider ourselves humanitarians if anything). But we must again remind you that our last event of the year is coming up this Thursday and it’s gunna be HUGE. Like really big. Like the buzz is that Kanye is going to be there. He heard about the prizes, including the gift certificates to a plethora of awesome local dives and eateries, and he couldn’t resist. Apparently Kanye has a soft spot for pink flamingos and bread pudding. Now if celebrity proximity and food doesn’t entice you, at least come and support your friends while they expose their most sacred vulnerabilities to the critical eye of the spectator. Join us in McGuire at 8:30.

Honfest Spotlight: Mark Hopkins

Every year, Baltimoreans turn out to celebrate their “Baltimore-ness” in Hampden with food, toilet bowl races and, of course music. This year, WLOY has it’s own stage where local artists will be playing ALL day! It is sure to be a fantastic time. One such talented local artist is Mark Hopkins. A self described “small-town funky white kid”, Mark Hopkins plays soulfully and dulectly. He has released several albums in the past and has recently come out with a new single titled “Miss Coincidence”. If you know what’s good for you, check out his website! It’s sure to please! Be sure to come out June 14th.

Double Dose Gets Intimate with Nina Davuluri, Miss America

This past week WLOY’s own Jordan and Joelle Hernandez, hosts of our radio show Double Dose of Entertainment, had the opportunity to sit down with Loyola’s keynote speaker Nina Davuluri for an exclusive interview. Double Dose lead the discussion, directing Miss America to speak briefly on her experiences with the prestigious competition and her sentiments of the Miss America organization in context of ethnic diversity.
