Tourism Tuesdays: Gizmos, Gadgets, and Gears at the Maryland Science Center

Tuesday, July 16th, 2013 by WLOY Staff

ggg_lrgUntil Labor Day

Maryland Science Center – 601 Light Street

The Maryland Science Center is the perfect getaway for kids. I remember my first trip to the center, when I was at the tender age of 15, was one that was really exciting and fun. This museum / all around fun center has tons of great exhibits for all patrons to learn about anything from the human body to the solar system. Plus, the center is located right in the Inner Harbor so it could be a part of your day trip downtown. From now until Labor Day, the Maryland Science Center will be offering a new exhibit, titled Gizmos Gadgets and Gears. The main premise of this exhibit is to have patrons engineer contraptions from other objects. Do you think you can turn a mouse-trap into a race-car? Can you make a helicopter out of a rubber band and some popsicle sticks? Have you ever made and used a pin-hole camera? Or thought about turning an old CD into art? This new exhibit will certainly get your creative juices flowing. Think you’ve got the imagination? Then head down to the Maryland Science Center. If you’ve got kids of your own, you’re just babysitting someone else’s, or you want to let out the kid inside of you, this tourist spot is one you definitely want to check out.

For more information, check out the Maryland Science Center’s website.

Saturday, Sunday, and Holidays: 11-7PM

10820 Beaver Dam Rd. Cockeysville, MD

While your local pool may be a great way to beat the Baltimore Summer heat, for many, myself included, the crowded conditions and screams of children just doesn’t cut it. And lets be honest, that backyard sprinkler hasn’t cooled you down since you were about 6 years old. Plus, everybody hates all the stupid rules to “prevent you from injuring yourself.” The Beaver Dam Swimming Club isn’t your typical swim getaway. This local, Summer spot is actually a swimming hole that “aims to bring the fun back into jumping into a really large puddle.” This club has spots for rope swings, cliff jumping, and more. Plus, if you get tired of swimming, you can head over to the basketball and volleyball courts for some dry fun. This swim club is comprised of 30 acres of freshwater quarries, pools, and ropes swings for people of all ages to enjoy. Plus, the swim club has a snack stand and shaded areas for patrons to enjoy a nice family cookout or picnic. After checking the Beaver Dam Swimming Club out, you will be sure to have found your new summer hangout.

Tourism Tuesdays: Govanstowne Farmer’s Market

Tuesday, June 25th, 2013 by WLOY Staff

FarmersMarketWednesdays from 3-7PM through September 11th

Loyola’s Public Safety and Motorpool Parking Lot – 5104 York Rd

The Govanstowne Famer’s Market was created in 2011 in an effort to bring fresh produce and business to an area in great need of it – the York Road Corridor. The market, which is sponsored by Loyola University Maryland, the York Road Partnership, and the Govanstowne Business Association, seeks to provide the York Road Community of North Baltimore with produce that is affordable, fresh, and local. By accepting benefits from federal, state, and local programs, the market is able to accommodate the needs of the York Road community. In the past two years, this market has been so successful that it has even been chosen by the United Way in researching food access in low income areas. The farmer’s market has produce vendors that sell anything from fresh desserts to savory barbecue. They even have a vendor that sells Thai and Vietnamese goods! The market also hosts various vendors to accommodate your crafting needs. Make sure you head down on Wednesdays for some good food and to support a great cause.

For more information, visit the Govanstowne Farmer’s Market website.
